Primary Purpose

Manages and operates the Bicentennial Hall Laboratory Stores, including purchasing, shipping/receiving and store functions.  Responsible for day-to-day functioning of the chemical management program and for other safety and compliance issues.  Oversees other storage facilities and materials management services in Bicentennial Hall.

Responsibilities

Works cooperatively with others and accepts direction from supervisors.

*Manages the Laboratory Stores, maintaining a focus on customer service and support, and ensuring performance of all tasks necessary for satisfactory operation of the facility.


*Hires, trains and supervises student store assistants, determining work schedules and assignments.


*Implements and maintains various inventory and chemical-management databases.


*Oversees other materials storage areas, including field equipment storage, lecture hall preparation and sixth floor storage rooms, ensuring that users comply with requirements for organization and cleanliness.


*Meets regularly with Director to discuss management issues, make recommendations for improvements and implement enhancements to operations.


*Manages ordering of all chemicals for the building, ensuring that quantity and type ordered fully meet the requirements of Middlebury's Chemical Hygiene Plan; confirms that Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS) are received or already on file for each ordered chemical; logs received chemicals for tracking purposes.


*Maintains the building file on MSDS's, assisting users in locating information and preparing copies for faculty and students upon request.


*Provides training to faculty and staff on the provisions of the Chemical Hygiene Plan.


*Oversees day-to-day hazardous waste operations, including assisting in transporting hazardous wastes to storage facility; logs in wastes; conducts daily facility inspections; ensures that storage quantity and time limits are not exceeded; interacts with hazardous waste disposal contractors.


*Serves on the campus and building safety committees.


*Operates laboratory store, pricing stock and dispensing supply items, chemicals, cryogens and gases to faculty, staff and students.  Prepares invoices for customer purchases.


*Ensures that adequate stocks of required supplies and equipment are maintained in inventory and that all procurement specifications are met, conducting inventories and preparing/placing orders as necessary.


*Consults periodically with faculty in an effort to determine the most beneficial selection of items to maintain in stock.


*Maintains the stores catalog file and provides ready access to the store's chemical and apparatus databases, assisting users in selecting and obtaining desired items.


*Ensures that all shipments to the building are properly received, checked in and delivered to recipients, resolving problems with vendors as necessary.


*Facilitates unloading of deliveries.


*Oversees materials management within the building, supervising work by student staff and outside moving contractors, and coordinating with Facilities Management personnel.


*Maintains accurate records of orders and received shipments, preparing related paperwork for Purchasing Department.


*Organizes stores to maximize usability, efficiency, and appearance.


*Ensures that all stores facilities and related storage areas are kept clean and free from spills, obstacles and other hazards, and that required safety standards are met.


*Ensures that chemicals and cylinder gases are properly segregated and stored by hazard class.


*Conducts periodic inventories of gas cylinders throughout the building.


*Ensures that building first-aid and spill cleanup kits are restocked as necessary.


*Prepares outgoing shipments, ensuring that all hazardous shipments are labeled in accordance with DOT requirements.


*Works as a team member with other STSS staff on projects in support of College teaching and research needs.


Assists in the care of mammals, plants, invertebrates, and other organisms.

Education & Training

Bachelor's degree or equivalent in relevant education and training.  Formal training in DOT hazardous materials regulations and EPA hazardous waste operations required (may be obtained after employment).

Experience

Chemical or biological laboratory experience in industry, college or high school required.  Prior retail or stockroom experience an asset.

Knowledge

Knowledge of computer use, including ability to work with computer databases such as Filemaker Pro.  Must be able to develop a working knowledge of inorganic and organic chemical nomenclature, as well as of specific types of laboratory glassware and equipment.  Current knowledge of these areas an asset.

Other

Must be reliable and able to work independently.  Must be exceptionally well organized, able to plan and anticipate customer needs regarding stock items and extremely detail oriented.  Must be capable of lifting and handling heavy packages and using dock equipment.  Must have a customer service orientation and be willing to work with staff, students, faculty and administrators.
