Primary Purpose

Provides administrative leadership and clinical supervision related to the delivery of orthopedic and related health services to the intercollegiate athletics and selected club sports programs at Middlebury College.

Responsibilities

Works cooperatively with others and accepts direction from supervisors.

Coordinates daily operation of department, providing emergency triage, treatment and rehabilitation of orthopedic and related health issues at all College athletic venues, including some events at the Breadloaf campus and the Snow Bowl.

Supervises all staff for medical competence providing feedback and training where indicated.


Assigns staff (regular and student) to maximize coverage of practices and contests of intercollegiate and game teams.


Reviews selected injury cases for implications affecting development and implementation of health care policies and emergency action procedures.


Monitors staff adherence to established policies and procedures.


Provides direct care as a certified athletic trainer to all student athletes and is assigned the highest risk sports of football and men's ice hockey which requires travel associated with both teams.


Prepares athletes for daily practice and games using acquired taping and wrapping skills to prevent an injury or to allow safe return to participation from an injury.


As time allows, instructs athletes and coaches in injury prevention.


Handles all adminsitrative matters for hte department, including administering the budget and managing equipment purchases.

Makes recommendations for protective equipment purchases to the Athletic Department.

Purchases all supplies (including pharmaceuticals) and maintains adequate inventories.

Responsible for all staffing in the department.


Supervises the hiring and educational training of student staff.


Acts as a liaison for the student health insurance program, interacting between parents, providers and insurance company.


Maintains professional working relationship with Health Center and Counseling Services on campus and the local network of community medical services.


Supervises and instructs staff in the entry of injury data into sports medicine computer system.  Plans for biannual upgrades and maintenance of computer program used for injury tracking.


Reports pertinent sports medicine issues and needs to the Dean of Student Affairs.

Performs other related tasks in order to meet medical needs of Athletes.

Education & Training

Master's degree in Athletic Training or related field required.

Experience

5 to 8 years experience as an athletic trainer and supervisor, or appropriate other basis of service.

Knowledge

Must be nationally (NATA) certified, AED certified, and eligible for state licensure.
 
Strong organizational and administrative skills. 

First Aid or CPR certification.

Must be able to adapt to a rapidly changing work environment.  Must be able to handle confidential information in a discreet manner.
