Primary Purpose |

The Assistant Director, Student Financial Services, administers and oversees all financial aid programs for Middlebury College Language Schools and the Bread Loaf Schools of English. The Assistant Director determines eligibility for institutional and federal financial aid and counsels recipients on all aspects of Middlebury's financial aid programs.

Responsibilities |
Works cooperatively with others and accepts direction from supervisors.
The primary objectives for this position are to:
1)Ensure that maximum care and service is deployed to assist parents and students to finance a Middlebury College education - particularly the Language Schools, and Breadloaf Schools of English student populations - and also admitted first year and returning undergraduates.
2)Sets goals and objectives (including budgets - in collaboration with Associate Director and Director) for Language Schools and Bread Loaf programs and ensures their successful operation.
3)Perform institutional need analysis and federal eligibility calculation for Language School and Bread Loaf applicants - and at times - admitted first year and returning undergraduates.
4)Constructs aid packages within the established guidelines and policies to meet the objectives of the college.
5)Uses professional judgment to work with parents and aid recipients to resolve issues regarding financial aid decisions and procedures within established guidelines, and reviews appeals to Language School and Bread Loaf financial aid decisions.
6)Administers financial services grant budgets for Language School and Bread Loaf, as well as prepares statistical reports on financial aid activity for the summer programs.
7)Works with enrolled students to maximize understanding of aid policies and procedures related to on and off campus study opportunities, as well as summer programs.
8)Develops and refines financial aid and computer systems for Language School and Bread Loaf programs, including oversight of delivery system.
9)Creates and revises Language school and Bread Loaf applications.
10)Perform outreach to parents and students to promote the various student-financing options that are available to prospective and continuing students, includes speaking to groups.
11)Continues to monitor regulatory developments governing all federal programs.
12)Performed other duties as assigned.

Education & Training |
|
Bachelor's degree required. A thorough working knowledge of Student Financial Services.

Experience |
|
2-3 years IM need analysis experience and 2 or more years of management experience in a higher education environemtn. A demonstrated commitment to service through the delivery of student financial services is required. Experience with SCT Banner preferred. Spreadsheet and word processinf applications are required.

Knowledge |
|
Strong verbal and written communications skills; strong background in critical needs analysis, awarding, counseling, and program administration in the financial aid field; experience in data analysis for decision support, leadership and conflict resolution skills a must.

The Assistant Director is a key member of the SFS management team. Teamwork, customer focus, continuous learning, applying technology, valuing diversity, big picture perspective and openness to change are integral to the success of the SFS management team. Finally, a strong commitment to service to parents and students is required for the success of the student financial services group. Therefore, a strong commitment to service is an essential and mandatory trait of the Assistant Director of Student Financial Services.
The Assistant Director comes in contact with many different personalities and types of people. The goodwill of the College must be reflected to all who come in contact with the Assistant Director, while utilizing appropriate measures to preserve the College's rights, resources, financial integrity and reputation in every instance. The Assistant Director is routinely involved in highly sensitive matters; errors in judgment could adversely affect the financial integrity and the reputation of the College.
