Primary Purpose

The Associate Vice President for Student Financial Services has broad responsibility for the management of Student Financial Services — a newly created group that combines the financial aid function and the bursar function to deliver integrated and focused financial services to parents and students.

Responsibilities

Works cooperatively with others and accepts direction from supervisors.

The primary objectives for this position are to:

1. Ensure that maximum care and service is deployed to assist parents and students to finance a Middlebury College education — including the undergraduate, study abroad, language schools, and Breadloaf Schools of English student populations.

2. Direct the student financing arm of Student Financial Services, including, maintaining and coordinating payment plan options, federal and institutional loans, federal and institutional aid, and federal work-study programs.

3. Direct the finance arm of Student Financial Services, including, billing, collection, and cashiering for student and non-student receivables.

4. Ensure, in collaboration with the Financial Systems Manager, that all SCT Banner modules and processes related to Student Financial Services (financial aid, student accounts receivable and finance) are working effectively and efficiently. The ultimate responsibility for the effective use of the information system resides with the Student Financial Services Director.

5. Develop institutional grant aid annual and multi-year projections and prepare related surveys and analysis.

6. Lead and direct, with respect and integrity, a group of twelve (12) staff to ensure the goals and objectives of the department and the College are achieved.

7. Develop innovative strategies to deliver student financial services.

8. Perform outreach to parents and students to promote the various student-financing options that are available to prospective and continuing students.

9. Performed other duties as assigned.

Education & Training

Bachelor’s degree in business, finance, or other related field. or graduate degree in business or finance. A thorough working knowledge of Student Financial Services.

Experience

10 or more years management experience in a higher education environment with significant experience in delivering student financial services, namely financial aid (including needs analysis and the financial aid process) and billing, collection and cashiering — and effective managing of receivables - is required. A demonstrated commitment to service through the delivery of student financial services is required. Experience with SCT Banner, including the financial aid, student accounts receivable, and finance modules — as well as spreadsheet and word processing applications — is required.

Knowledge

Strong verbal and written communications skills; ability to articulate strategies and implement student financing policies; budget management; demonstrated ability to organize information, time and widely disparate priorities and complex issues so as to accomplish multiple, on-going and unrelated time critical tasks.

EOUIPMENT1MACHINERY USED: All normal office equipment including microcomputers.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENT: Good health, physically able to access all areas of the campus, both for routine visits and during emergency incidents.

COMMENTS:

The Associate Vice President is a key member of the Controller’s management team and represents the Finance group at all meetings related to Student Financial Services. An in-depth knowledge of financial aid needs analysis, federal aid and loans regulations, billing, collection, and cashiering principles, institutional aid budget development, and accounting principles and methods for receivables and loans is required. In addition, an in-depth and knowledge of the SCT Banner system specifically as it relates to the financial aid, student accounts receivable, and finance modules, is required. Finally, a strong commitment to service to parents and students is required for the success of the student financial services group. Therefore, a strong commitment to service is an essential and mandatory trait of the Student Financial Services AVP.
The AVP comes in contact with many different personalities and types of people. The goodwill of the College must be reflected to all who come in contact with the AVP, while utilizing appropriate measures to preserve the College’s rights, resources, financial integrity and reputation in every instance. The AVP is routinely involved in highly sensitive matters; errors in judgment could adversely affect the financial integrity and the reputation of the College.
