Primary Purpose

Vermont Campus Compact is a consortium of 22 college and university campuses aiming to catalyze the public missions of higher education. The Associate Director holds a leadership position within the organization, working collaboratively with the Executive Director and VCC staff to fulfill VCC’s mission of promoting service, service-learning and civic engagement in higher education.

The primary responsibilities of the Associate Director are to direct and manage VCC programs and services for member campuses and their stakeholders, with specific focus areas in faculty development and grant management. The Associate Director must be able to develop and maintain professional relationships and work effectively with campus stakeholders, such as faculty, academic administrators, service-learning and civic engagement directors, and students. He/she must be comfortable with both leadership and management functions related to a wide variety of events, program and technical assistance activities designed to support civic engagement efforts across Vermont. He/she will assist in grant development, as well as strategic and organizational planning. The Associate Director will work as a member of a dynamic team and will possess a balance of visionary and creative capacity with strong organization and detail focus.

Responsibilities

Works cooperatively with others and accepts direction from supervisors.

  • Work with the Executive Director to develop initiatives to advance and promote civic engagement statewide.
  • Oversee development, implementation and administration of office strategic planning, in coordination with Director, staff, and key stakeholders.
  • Participate in overall organizational planning, development and evaluation with other staff and stakeholders.
  • Oversee all programming and assist in monitoring the various programs and activities of the organization.
  • Manage staff relations and staff development, including, teambuilding, staff communication, professional development, and evaluation.
  • Assist in hiring of new staff, including screening, interviewing and reference checks. Supervise new employees, as assigned.
  • Manage and develop systems for new employee orientation, training, and evaluation.
  • Develop and implement diverse statewide and regional programming that encourages engagement of students, faculty, administrators and community partners in community-based teaching, learning, research and service.
  • Manage and oversee all aspects of major grants related to service-learning and civic engagement, including developing guidelines and dissemination procedures for Requests for Proposals (RFPs), managing sub-grantees and monitoring sub-grantee budgets, facilitating meetings and technical assistance sessions, writing reports, organizing and conducting site visits, monitoring and evaluating programs, and disseminating outcomes regionally and nationally.
  • Collaborate with faculty facilitators to develop agendas and academic content of workshops, institutes and other trainings for faculty.
  • Collaborate and/or network with counterparts at other Campus Compact offices to enhance member services and VCC programs, including managing tri-state grants collaboratively with Campus Compact offices of Maine and New Hampshire.
  • Provide programmatic, administrative and budget oversight for campus grants on service-learning, campus/community partnerships and related topics.
  • Provide outreach and support to students, faculty, and staff at member colleges and facilitate collaboration and networking among member campuses.
  • Develop new resources and programs in response to priorities/needs defined by VCC constituents.
  • Collect and disseminate information on model courses/programs, development opportunities and resources, including keeping Web site up to date with current and relevant resources.
  • Coordinate publications to disseminate new information or outcomes from grants.
  • Coordinate and/or support grant writing and other program fundraising efforts to help VCC achieve its mission, build the organization, and enhance member program support and resources.
  • Advance mission and goals of VCC.

  • Master’s degree and 6-8 years of experience higher education and/or service-learning leadership.
  • A deep-seated commitment to and knowledge of service-learning and civic engagement.
  • Demonstrated ability to build partnerships and relate effectively with diverse constituents, including faculty, administrators, staff and students, as well as leaders in local, state and national organizations.
  • Experience in grants management, program and resource development, collaborative leadership, program planning, implementation and management; grant writing and management.
  • Demonstrated excellence in writing, oral and interpersonal communication; program/event planning; and organizational, financial & administrative skills.

Education & Training

Master's degree is preferred; Bachelor's degree with additional experience will be considered.

Experience

  • 3-5 years experience in higher education and/or service learning leadership.
  • Experience in grants management, program and resource development, collaborative leadership, program planning, implementation and management; grant writing and management; working with diverse stakeholders, and knowledge of service-learning preferred.

Knowledge

Demonstrated excellence in writing, oral and interpersonal communication, program coordination skills, and organizational & administrative skills.
