A successful performance feedback and development process is a shared one. An employee and supervisor should listen to each other’s perceptions regarding the duties to be done and responsibilities to be fulfilled as they relate to the employee's position. Together they should discuss current performance, new directions, and goals.

To be effective, performance feedback should be frequent, open and ongoing communication. Supervisors are required to schedule an annual performance feedback and development session with each of their employees. The session will be documented on the Performance Feedback and Development Process Form and filed with Human Resources. As part of the process, the supervisor is required to schedule a 6-month interim meeting, which does not need written documentation.

The Performance Feedback and Development Process Form guides the annual discussion and provides the format for documentation. Departments are encouraged to supplement this form with documentation that is job specific.
