Students who are moving out of College housing (going abroad, graduation, changing rooms) must return their dorm keys immediately. A nonrefundable key charge of $50 will be billed within 3 days after a student's move out date if the key has not been returned. An additional $50 will be charged for a lock change if the key is not returned.
Any student returning a key that was signed out for temporary reasons (lockout key, lost their original key and found it later that day, stolen & returned) must present both keys at Public Safety within 24 hours of the issuance of the temporary key. A member of Public Safety must verify that the missing key has been located and that the Temporary key is being returned. Unless the original key is presented along side of the temporary key, a lock change will occur and the students account will be billed accordingly. If the student does not return the temporary key, their account will be charged an additional $50. For returning the loaner key issued to you refer to our lock change policy. · The Locksmiths have had issues in the past with students trying to get them to not change the door locks while they are working. We ask that students do not interfere with the locksmiths job as this will not prevent the lock change from being charged to their account.
· Keys need to be returned within the specified timeframe so that we have enough time to prepare the room for the next occupant. Often times we have less than a week to receive, inventory, and re-issue over 2 thousand residential keys.
· We encourage students to return the keys as soon as possible [even if already late] as there have been some instances where students beat the work order process with no charge to their account. Although rare, we do like to mention it as it does happen and often will save the student the $50 charge. More commonly, returning the keys sooner may prevent a lock change from occurring saving the student an additional $50. We cannot guarantee that one or more of these will not occur as it depends on the timing and other variables such as when the locks themselves are changed. Our goal is not to assess charges to the students’ accounts but to maintain an accurate Inventory and for security reasons, address missing keys in a timely manner.
