April 13, 2009

Dear Students,

I write to inform you of a new parking policy that will go into effect during the 2009-2010 academic year.  Beginning next September, students who have automobiles on campus must pay a $50 fee each semester—$100 for the year—to register their vehicles and receive a valid parking pass. This fee will apply to on-campus residents as well as commuters.  Language School students will be charged $25 for the summer.

Funds accrued from the new parking fee will support the expansion of the College’s shuttle bus service and our fleet of ZipCars, the College’s carbon neutrality initiative and off sets, and will relieve the cost of maintaining our parking lots (plowing and repairing them).  By enhancing the transportation options on campus, we hope to reduce the use of automobiles and create a more pedestrian-friendly environment, as recommended in the Campus Master Plan.  Although we do not expect the number of registered cars to drop significantly next year, we expect that this policy, when combined with other initiatives, will contribute in a small way to Middlebury’s goal of reaching carbon neutrality by 2016.

Details about how to pay next year’s registration fee will be available later this spring from the Department of Public Safety.  Also, a list of FAQ’s about this policy will be posted through the Public Safety website.

Sincerely,
Gus Jordan

Attention Faculty and Staff;

I am writing to let you know about a change in parking rules for the lot next to Admissions. In order to provide visitor parking spaces in the Admissions front parking lot for prospective students and their families, the lot has been changed to Visitor Parking only, March 1 – November 1, M—F, 8 a.m. – 4 p.m. The new signs for this lot will be going up this afternoon notifying the community of this change.

The back lot will continue to be posted for use by faculty/staff Monday through Friday.

In order to help people adjust to this change and give people notice who may not have access to e-mail, we will be taking the following steps:

  • Placing sandwich boards at the entrance of the lot notifying people of the change for next two weeks
  • For the next week the Department of Public Safety will issue warning notices to any faculty or staff vehicle park in the front lot

If you have any questions, please contact the Department of Public Safety at publicsafety@middlebury.edu.

Sincerely,

Elizabeth B. Boudah

September 2008

The Department of Public Safety would like to provide the following parking information for the 2008 - 2009 academic year.

Due to construction, the loss of the some faculty/staff parking (near the Service Building and Proctor Hall) and the relocation of some departments on campus, the following changes have been made:

C lot (near the Freeman International Center) - additional spaces have been designated for Faculty/Staff parking.

Q lot (Mahaney Center for the Arts) - one row of student parking has been designated as "S" permit (Junior/Senior) parking only.

- the two additional rows of Faculty/Staff parking created last year remain designated as such for 2008 - 2009.

Fire Lanes - Student move in has a significant impact on campus parking. When moving in please remember to unload your belongings and then move your vehicle to your designated student parking lot immediately. This allows others access to the unloading areas near the residence halls, helps keep fire lanes clear and avoids enforcement action.

Students are prohibited from parking in Faculty/Staff lots, Monday - Friday between 12:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. First year students are required to park in the Kenyon lot at all times. Starting on Sunday, September 7, 2008 student vehicles must be in the correct student parking lot as designated by their parking permit. Student vehicles that are not parked in designated student lots by midnight will be ticketed or towed.

During the mid term recess, October 13 & 14, 2008, the College is open for business and faculty/staff parking rules apply. Students are not permitted to park in faculty/staff spaces on these days.

Middlebury College does provide sufficient parking on campus. Vehicles should be parked in designated campus parking lots. College policy prohibits students from parking on nearby town streets. Complete parking information can be found at Public Safety, 125 South Main Street, or by visiting our website at: http://www.middlebury.edu/administration/publicsafety/.

If you have any questions, please contact the Department of Public Safety at: publicsafety@middlebury.edu, Non-Emergency ext. 5133 or Campus Emergency ext. 5911.

Thanks,

Daniel V. Gaiotti
