-Definition

Alternate PIN

- Special personal identification numbers required for students who have earned fewer than 21 credits to register in BannerWeb. Students get their Alternate PIN from their academic adviser when they meet for academic advising.

Approval

-Means by which a student, at the discretion of the instructor, is allowed in an approval-required course. A student must register on BannerWeb after receiving an approval.

-A student who gets an approval and registers for the approval-required course is guaranteed enrollment in the course.

Approval-required Course

-Course having qualitative criteria which students must satisfy to gain access (e.g., audition, language proficiency, etc.).

-Course instructor determines the students who qualify for an approval-required course and submits names to the department coordinator for processing. Student must register for the course on BannerWeb in order to be enrolled in the course.

-500-level and 700-level courses in a department in which a thesis is not required (e.g., "Honors Work").

-Instead of using enrollment priority groupings, students are referred to the department for enrollment priority.

Class Access

-A course may be restricted to students from specific classes (e.g., "Open to students who have earned <21 credits").

Class Standing

-Your class standing for registration in a future term in the BannerWeb system is determined by total credits earned (not counting AP, IB, or other credits awarded through testing) and currently enrolled at the time of registration, e.g., 21 credits earned or in progress. See definitions below. 

Class Standing Codes

Credits earned by the end of Winter Term:

College Writing Credit

-Designation for specific course sections which focus on developing the skills of written communication.

-Identified on the Course Schedule with "CW."

-After completion of a First-year Seminar, every student must take an additional course in their second, third or fourth term which awards College writing credit.

Course

-Offered by a department and may have one or more sections, including lecture and non-lecture sections.

-Identified by a four character department code plus a 4- digit course number (e.g., MUSC 0220)

Course Reference Number (CRN)  

-Five-digit number identifying each course element, including lecture, discussion, labs, screenings, etc. 

-Used in BannerWeb to register for courses and linked sections.

Course Section

-Either a lecture section (i.e., the "main" section for the course which awards credit) or a non-lecture section (e.g., a lab, discussion, drill, or screening required for the course)

Cross-listed Course

-A single course, listed in two or three different departments, with the same 4-digit course number in all departments.

-Available for registration through the subject/department of the primary instructor.

Department Exam Equivalent (DEE)

-Department course(s) for which student has taken an exam establishing competency.

-A course that the student can "use" as a prerequisite without having actually taken the course.

-A department may indicate more than one DEE course associated with a single exam.

-Student is not given credit for the course as with Advanced Placement equivalencies (i.e., the DEE will not appear on transcript).

Drop/Add Period

-Time period following registration when students may change their enrollment by dropping and/or adding course section(s).

-Adding courses is a manual process of submitting a Add card, signed by the instructor and the student's adviser, to the Registrar's Office.

-Dropping courses can be done on-line via BannerWeb at any time through the end of the Add period two weeks into the term.  The last three weeks of the Drop period will convert to a manual card process where faculty and adviser signatures are required.

Enrollment

-In BannerWeb, a student is enrolled in a section of a course as soon as the registration is accepted on BannerWeb.

-Students are enrolled until the section is full.

Exchange Students

-Students who come from some other colleges/universities in England, Japan, and France to study at Middlebury as part of an exchange program.

-Are given the same registration window as those who have earned between 17.00 - 26.99 credits.

-Not candidates for a Middlebury College degree.

ID #

-Unique eight digit number identifying every Middlebury College student and used to access BannerWeb.

-Used jointly with a student's PIN to validate identity.

Lecture Section

-Main section in which a student must be enrolled to receive credit for a course.

The section does not necessarily have a lecture format; it can be a seminar or independent study.

-Identified by section letters A - L.

-Every course has at least one lecture section, section A.

Major

-Area of study in which a student focuses his/her academic endeavors.

-A student may have a department major (e.g., ART) or a program major (e.g., AMCV).

Major Equivalent

-Major(s) that are included and considered equal during registration for the department offering the course.

Non-lecture Section

-Supplementary meeting of a course, such as labs, discussions, drills, and screenings, for which no credit is given.

-Must be taken in conjunction with the lecture section.

-Identified by section letters Z - M.

Override

-Means by which a student may, at the discretion of the instructor, register for a course from which she or he would otherwise be restricted.

-Instructors will grant overrides of restrictions via the BannerWeb for Faculty.  These overrides can be granted individually by the instructor, or they may choose to override all restrictions on the course (typically, major, class standing, or prerequisites).

-The student must request and receive the override before the registration window opens and then must register for the course during registration.

Round One--Check your Status

-It is very important to use this round to find out if you need to request overrides or approvals before your registration window opens. Other issues such as time conflicts will show up during this round and alert you to review your schedule to avoid problems.  Also, students will want to check their registration window/class standing for registration during this round.

Prerequisite

-Course that must be taken in the current or a prior term in order to register for a subsequent course.

Registration Window 

-The time period allowed for students in each class to register for courses for the following term. Students who miss the registration window for their class must use the add/drop process for registration.

-This operates on a first-come first-served basis, based on your credit-based class standing.

Restrictions

-Academic condition(s) not met by the student which prohibit the student from registering for a section (e.g., A student who has only earned 20 credits can not register for a course "Open to students with 27-36+ credits earned").

-A student may apply for an override of these restrictions from the instructor.

-BannerWeb may restrict access to a course by: prerequisite; credit-based class standing; or major.

Special Student

-Student needing only one or two courses to graduate.

-Must apply to the Administration Committee to be approved as a Special Student. 

-Not allowed to register for more than two courses; Students pay the per course fee.

Students Abroad

-Students who may be registering but are not enrolled currently in courses at the Middlebury, Vermont campus

Transfer Students

-Students who have transferred in their Sophomore or Junior year to Middlebury.

-Candidates for a Middlebury College degree.

Visiting Student

-Visiting Students from other colleges may be admitted through the Administration Committee as non-matriculating students.

-Visiting students are not candidates for a Middlebury College degree

Wait-list

-Students who registered for a course but were denied enrollment may choose to place themselves on a wait-list for a course if the option was set up by the instructor.  This does not guarantee placement in the course in a future term.
