GOLDWATER SCHOLARSHIPS

PURPOSE
To provide a continuing source of highly qualified individuals for academic study and research in mathematics, the natural sciences, and engineering by awarding scholarships to outstanding sophomores and juniors who demonstrate interest in related fields.

AWARD
The stipend covers eligible expenses for tuition, fees, books, and room and board up to a maximum of $7,500 annually, independent of need.  Maximum:  2 years for juniors; 1 year for seniors.

Up to 300

ELIGIBILITY
Students who are US citizens, resident aliens, or US nationals, sophomores and juniors in the academic year 2007-08, and having a 3.0 or better GPA are eligible to apply. To be considered, a student must be nominated by Middlebury College; the college may nominate up to four students.  NOTE:  Students who plan to study medicine are eligible only if they plan a research career rather than a career as a medical doctor in private practice.

DEADLINES

  • January 6, 2010, for Middlebury nomination materials
      To be submitted by the Middlebury deadline:
      -- General Scholarship Information form
               (available on Fellowships website)
      -- Banner Degree Progress Report
      -- Biographical statement
      -- Essay describing a research project
      -- Résumé
  • Online application deadline:  January 29, 2010, 5 p.m. (includes 3 on-line recommendations)
  • Final application, with all supporting documents, must be received at the Goldwater Foundation by February 1, 2010. We will mail them on January 28.
      Included in the final, mailed packet:
        ~ final essay
        ~ official secondary-school transcript (don't request one
           until you know you're a candidate, however)
        ~ official college transcripts from any colleges attended
          (Fellowship Office will obtain Midd transcript only)
        ~ permanent resident card (2 copies) and letter of
            intent, if applicable
  • Nominees and faculty representatives are notified of their final status in late March 2010.
