Purpose

Funding advanced education and graduate study carried out in the United States of America. “Mrs. Liebmann’s primary concern, as expressed in her will, was to attract and support students with outstanding character and ability who hold promise for achievement and distinction in their chosen field of study.”

Eligible Candidates

  • Have outstanding undergraduate records (minimum 3.8)
  • Have demonstrated a need for financial assistance (i.e., have received significant financial aid in the form of grants as undergraduates)
  • Are U.S. citizens
  • Are enrolling in graduate programs in the United States
  • Have evidence of outstanding character
  • Are current seniors

Award

The amount of each fellowship will cover the cost of tuition and a stipend to be allocated towards room, board, living expenses and income taxes ($18,000 + tuition).

Application Process

  1. Submit the following documents to Associate Dean Associate Dean for Assessment and Planning/Fellowship Advisor Lisa Gates by early January 2010.
  2. Middlebury may nominate 3 candidates for this fellowship. Nominees will be determined and notified by mid-January.
  3. Nominees should expect to work closely and energetically with Dean Gates to prepare all final materials during the month of January.
  4. Please note that nominees will be expected to submit transcripts from any other undergraduate institution you may have attended during your college years, as well as your last two years of federal tax returns and copies of all graduate school entrance scores. All applicants should make sure these documents will be at your disposal in January.
  5. All final materials must be submitted to Dean Gates by the end of the third week in January.
  6. Decisions will be announced by the Dolores Zohrab Liebmann Trustee and Selection Committee in April 2010.
