Middlebury College's Telephone Service department:
assigns extensions and TACs (Telephone Authorization Codes) to faculty and staff members for departmental and personal calling
provides an analog or digital telephone and a voice mailbox, as required
maintains the telephone network so faculty and staff may:
place unlimited on-campus calls
place unlimited calls to local calling area locations
place billable, long distance calls using TACs
receive incoming calls
monitors telephone charges and investigates disputed calls
oversees telephone moves and repairs Extensions:
Faculty and staff members who need an extension for their work at Middlebury College are assigned a four-digit extension number. An extension remains with that faculty or staff member throughout his or her college career unless otherwise requested. The telephone number for that extension is (802) 443-####. To reach another extension on campus, simply dial the four-digit extension.
Long Distance Service:
Faculty and staff members are issued two confidential 7-digit TACs (Telephone Authorization Codes) by Telephone Services. Most departmental TACs begin with a "2" and are followed by 6-digits. TACs for personal calling begin with a "1" and are followed by 6-digits.
Telephones:
Most offices are provided with digital (Ericsson) telephones. A technician will be asked to fix the telephone or line when you report a phone difficulty to Telephone Services.
Because the Middlebury College telephone system is Ericsson-specific, alternative phones units may not be used.
Cellular Service:
If you are interested in cellular service, please contract Telephone Services to learn more about these two carriers in Vermont and services they offer.
Voice Mailboxes:
Every faculty and staff member who has a private extension may be assigned a voice mailbox. If a faculty member goes on sabbatical and, for the duration, does not have an office on Middlebury College property, the voice mailbox will remain attached to the extension either remaining as a traditional voice mailbox or converting to voice mail-only. Voice mail-only extensions cannot be used for making or receiving calls because the extension is not affiliated with a specific telephone unit.
FTC Do-Not-Call Registration:
The recently enacted Federal Trade Commission Telemarketing Sales Rule (TSR) allows you to register your home phone number with the National Do Not Call Registry to reduce telemarketing calls. This service is for residential numbers only and excludes business numbers.
To place a ban on unsolicited calls at home, from your home phone call 888-382-1222 or log onto https://www.donotcall.gov/default.aspx. Registration is free. Third parties may not request placement on this list on your behalf. Calling from your office would be consider third party interference.
You may also protect your cell phone from telemarketers by calling, from that phone, 888-382-1222.
The TSR does not apply to:
telecom carriers,
airlines,
banks,
insurance companies (per state regulations), and
non-profit organizations (includes political organizations). The ban does apply to for-profit companies, including for-profit telemarketers hired by those directly exempt.
You may verify your number has been placed on the "do not call list" by visiting https://www.donotcall.gov/default.aspx. Registered numbers will remain in the system for five years, until the phone number becomes unused, or if the user-phone information changes.
Vermont will adopt the National Do Not Call Registry in place of the state's existing "do not call" list, so registering with the national registry will include you in both federal and state protection. Consumers who register will notice a drop in telemarketing calls within three months. Federal enforcement of the National Do Not Call Registry began October 1, 2003.
For additional information and details, see the Federal Trade Commission's National Do Not Call Registry web site http://www.ftc.gov/bcp/conline/edcams/donotcall/index.html.
