Middlebury College's Telephone Services:
Provides an analog telephone and a voice mailbox, free of charge.
Maintains connections so you may:
Place unlimited on-campus calls.
Place unlimited calls to local calling area locations.
Receive incoming calls.
Offers pre-paid long distance telephone service.
Oversees telephone charges and investigates disputed calls. Extensions:
As of the fall term 2007, extensions are assigned to a room. If you move, you will be assinged a new extension and your new number will appear in the online directory. The telephone number for off-campus calls to that extension is (802) 443-####. To reach another extension on campus, dial the four-digit extension only. Telephone extensions are marked on the jack and on the telephone in your room. If you are in doubt as to what extension is assigned to a phone, call the campus operator (dial 0) from that phone and ask the operator to identify the number.
Long Distance Service:
Once on campus and using a credit card, a student may signup at MiddTel for a TAC (telephone authorization code).
Telephones:
Every dorm room resident is provided a standard, touchtone, analog telephone free of charge. If a unit fails out of normal use the telephone will be replaced. Broken telephones should be reported to Telephone Services in Voter Hall, room 229, and a replacement will be provided.
If a telephone is broken due to obvious mistreatment a replacement will be provided with a $25 fee charged against that student's account.
Personally purchased telephones such as cordless sets may be used, if desired, but the College's Telephone Service department will not maintain them.
Voice Mailboxes:
Every student is assigned a voice mailbox correlating to their room extension. If a student moves to another room during the year, the old voice mailbox is deleted and recreated with the new number. If a student moves off campus, a software voice mailbox is created and listed in the online directory so callers can leave messages for you, or you can refer them to your off campus telephone number.
Cellular Service:
Many students choose to bring cellular telephones to campus. At present we find that Verizon Wireless and Unicel offer the best reception and service plans for the Middlebury area. Sprint PCS/Nextel cellular service also have reception in Middlebury and competitive plans. Cingular does not cover the Middlebury area according to their Web sites. For details on these or other cellular carriers' coverage, please visit their Web site. Students should understand that reception may be poor in a few campus locations due to College building construction and off-campus due to Vermont's terrain and inadequate cell tower coverage.
Unwanted Telephone Solicitations:
FTC Do-Not-Call Registration
The Federal Trade Commission Telemarketing Sales Rule (TSR) allows you to register your college extension with the National Do Not Call Registry to reduce telemarketing calls. To place a ban on unsolicited calls to your extension, log onto https://www.donotcall.gov/default.aspx. Registration is free. You will have to provide an e-mail address for confirmation. Third parties, such as Telephone Services, may not request placement on this list on your behalf.
You may also protect your cell phone from telemarketers by calling 888-382-1222 from that phone. This number may NOT be used to place your extension on that list. For extensions, you must use the web site noted above.
The TSR does not apply to:
telecom carriers,
airlines,
banks,
insurance companies (per state regulations), and
non-profit organizations (includes political organizations). The ban does apply to for-profit companies, including for-profit telemarketers hired by those directly exempt.
You may verify your number has been placed on the "do not call list" by visiting https://www.donotcall.gov/default.aspx. Registered numbers will remain in the system for five years, until the phone number becomes unused, or if the student changes extensions.
Those who register should notice a drop in telemarketing calls within three months from their registration date.
For additional information and details, see the Federal Trade Commission's National Do Not Call Registry web site http://www.ftc.gov/bcp/conline/edcams/donotcall/index.html.
Please check https://www.donotcall.gov/default.aspx each year to confirm you remain registered.
If you are the recipient of unwanted telephone solicitation, here are some suggestions:
1. Under the recent FTC's Telemarketing Sales Rule, all consumers have to do to exercise their right to stop a telemarketer from calling is simply ask the caller not to phone them again. If the telemarketing firm does call again, it's breaking the law and the consumer should report it to the state Attorney General's office for action. The number for the Vermont Attorney General's consumer assistance program is 1-800-649-2424, and the main number for the Attorney General's office is 802-828-3171.
2. If you would like Telephone Services to help you, please find out the name of the company that is calling and get their telephone number, if possible. Report the information to us at Telephone Services or call 5700.
Now that you have the overview, please go to "Placing Telephone Calls."
