Summer Research Program Faculty Information

On-Campus Summer Research Assistant

A Summer Research Assistant is paid a stipend that does not include housing or dining. The 2009 stipend rate is $390 per week for a 40 hour equivalent. Stipends will be prorated for between 20 and 40 hours. See Student Employment for more information on summer housing and dining.

If a Summer Research Assistant is not paid through the Middlebury payroll (either upaid or paid from an outside source) the student is considered a volunteer and Volunteer Information Form must be filled out.

In order to receive a research student stipend, a Summer Research Authorization (SRAA) Form must be completed. This form confirms that the research meets the criteria outlined in the Policies and Procedures for Summer Research Assistants, and should be submitted to the Undergraduate Research Office with the faculty mentor and the budget administrator of the funding's signature.

Summer Research Funding

Funding for summer research can be found from many sources. Middlebury funding is available for both on-campus and off-campus opportunities. External funding is also available for both and on and off-campus opportunities. It is important to read the details and criteria for each opportunity to make sure it fits your particular need.

The Undergraduate Research Office has several endowed funds available for summer research thanks to generous donors. More information on URO Summer Research Funds
