Each year the Institute for Humane Studies sponsors an essay contest for undergraduate students on a provocative topic, and awards prize money for first, second, third place and two honorable mentions. The essay question is broad and can be explored from multiple disciplinary perspectives. The 2007-08 questions was "What factors lead to prosperity, progress, and human flourishing?"
