Beaufort, South Carolina
An Introduction to the History and Culture of the Carolina Lowcountry
Join President Emeritus and Professor of History John M. McCardell, Jr., at the Beaufort Inn. Beaufort, South Carolina, offers seaside charm, Southern hospitality, and well-preserved antebellum architecture. In addition to lectures on the history and culture of the region—beginning during colonial times and proceeding through the Civil War to the present—the four-day visit to Beaufort will include:
a visit to the site where Martin Luther King, Jr., wrote his "I have a dream" speech, at the Penn Center;
a nature walk at Hunting Island;
tours of several historic homes and plantations;
an oyster roast;
visits to civil war sites at Port Royal;
a trip to the site of the initial Emancipation Proclamation;
a great lunch in Frogmore with Gullah food;
and visits to local galleries.
In August of 2005 An introduction to the geology and botany of Montana's Big Sky Country, happened in Red Lodge, Montana.
