Gift to French School

The French School received an unexpected gift of more than $800,000 from alumnus Archibald James Welton, who earned an MA from the school in 1949. 100th Anniversary Celebrations and Events

The Middlebury Language Schools is celebrating 100 years of innovative language education, and we’re planning special events to commemorate our centennial. As events are finalized, we will post information here.

Photos Through the Years

Take a look at some archival photos of life at the Language Schools over the years—from the rudimentary language labs of the 1920s to spirited al fresco dining in the 1990s, and the many years in between. It’s a testament to time and also to the enduring and ever-relevant importance of immersive language learning. See more.

Learning Language Through Dance

As the forerunner of the Language Schools in 1915, the German School began in Bristol, Vermont, and flourished under the direction of Ernst Feise throughout the 1930s and 1940s. The seven-week program strove for students to “live and work in an atmosphere as distinctly German as if they were traveling in Germany.” Integral to that goal was learning to perform dances native to German culture while wearing native German dress. Challenge Continued—Make Your Gift Now and Double the Impact!

Last fall, in honor of the 100th anniversary of the founding of Middlebury’s first summer Language School, Ted and Kathy O’Connor Truscott announced they would match all gifts made to the Language Schools up to a total of $350,000. We met the challenge and, inspired by that success, the Truscotts have offered to match an additional $150,000 in gifts. Both members of the Class of 1983, Ted attended the Chinese School, while Kathy spent a semester in Madrid through the Schools Abroad. Join them in in celebrating the centennial by making a gift now
