Santa Fe Opera
What could be better than an evening of great opera in a magnificent setting on a summer evening in the Rocky Mountains? Alumni College will travel to Santa Fe, New Mexico, next July 10 through 15, to offer a course combining lectures by Middlebury faculty members with three evening performances by the Santa Fe Opera.
Morning classes and discussion will be led by Professors John Hunisak and Greg Vitercik. Then we will have front and center seats for Santa Fe Opera performances of Mozart’s Così fan tutte, Puccini’s La bohème, and Richard Strauss’s Daphne. To learn more about these performances, see the descriptions on the Web at www.santafeopera.org.
The afternoons will be open for enjoying Santa Fe and the northern New Mexico area. Santa Fe’s museums and art galleries have brought it a well-deserved reputation as an art center. Northern New Mexico is a treasure trove of beautiful national parks, Native American pueblos, and archeological ruins. John Hunisak will lead a tour of the Georgia O’Keeffe Museum, and there will be an optional trip to Taos to visit the Taos pueblo, America’s oldest continuing community.
We will be staying in downtown Santa Fe at the Inn and Spa at Loretto (www.innatloretto.com). In addition to the lodging, classes, and orchestra seats for the three operas, the course fee includes breakfasts, the welcome reception and dinner, a lunch, a buffet dinner on the grounds of the Santa Fe Opera on our last evening, and travel to and from the operas and museums. The course will be limited to 35 participants, with spaces available on a first-come, first-served basis.
