Join President Emeritus and Professor of History John M. McCardell, Jr., at the Beaufort Inn. Beaufort, South Carolina, offers seaside charm, Southern hospitality, and well-preserved antebellum architecture. In addition to lectures on the history and culture of the region—beginning during colonial times and proceeding through the Civil War to the present—the four-day visit to Beaufort will include:
a visit to the site where Martin Luther King, Jr., wrote his "I have a dream" speech, at the Penn Center;
a nature walk at Hunting Island;
tours of several historic homes and plantations;
an oyster roast;
visits to civil war sites at Port Royal;
a trip to the site of the initial Emancipation Proclamation;
a great lunch in Frogmore with Gullah food;

Visit to Penn Center, first school for freedmen, 1862
Introduction to the African-American culture of St. Helena Island
Lunch at Frogmore, Gullah food, art galleries
Hunting Island or ACE Basin – TBD

Visit to one of the historical churches in the area, participate in Martin Luther King services
Afternoon on one's own—choice of area activities

Departure or impromptu group outing
This course will be taught by Professor of History and President Emeritus John M. McCardell, Jr. Professor McCardell and his wife Bonnie will be living in Beaufort while on sabbatical for the 2004-05 academic year. Professor McCardell's intimate knowledge of the local surroundings will help bring the area's rich history alive for our Alumni College participants.
