Alumni College: Marine Biology in Monterey, CA

More than a dozen alumni and friends joined Alumni College favorite, Professor Sallie Sheldon, and faculty from the Monterey Institute and scientists from the Monterey Bay Aquarium for an on-site course on marine biology.  Beautiful Monterey on the California coast, is the home of the world renowned Monterey Bay Aquarium, as well as the newest addition to the Middlebury family, the Monterey Institute of International Studies.  Accommodations were at the Portola Plaza Hotel, on Fisherman's Wharf in the heart of Old Monterey.  The four-day course included:

  • Opening night reception and dinner at the Portola Plaza Hotel.
  • An afternoon at the Monterey Bay Aquarium, with a behind-the-scenes tour led by Karl Mayer, '89, animal care coordinator for sea otter conservation and research, and George Leonard '86.
  • Low tide "intertidalling" with Sallie Sheldon.
  • A scientific exploration of the bay under sail on the Aquarium's research vessel.
  • A tour of Cannery Row.
  • Alumni reception surrounded by monsters of the deep, and dancing jelly-fish in the Aquarium's outer bay wing. 
  • Introduction to MIIS by President Clara Yu, and an optional tour of the MIIS campus.
  • Free time to enjoy Fisherman's Wharf, visit spectacular Point Lobos National Park, hike at Big Sur, or enjoy a tasting tour of the wine country.
