Jane and Paul Schosberg on safari in Kenya on their 39th wedding anniversary, in 1997, at Lewa Downs, a 45,000-acre ranch and wildlife sanctuary.
Paul wrote on April 18, 2005, "June will be 30 years since Jane and I and our children, Jill and Richard, moved back to New York after 10 years in the Washington, D.C., area. By then I had completed my tour of duty as chief of staff to two congressmen from New
York, and Disneyworld-on-the-Potomac was no longer the center of our universe. Moving with us were two horses, two dogs and one cat. We got into breeding and showing German shepherds, I in the early 60s. While living in Fairfax County, Virginia, the kids got into ponies and horse shows, after which Jane and I tentatively entered the world of Thoroughbred breeding and racing. Today, Pine Lane Farm, Inc., a Sub S corporation, is thriving as a commercial breeder and seller of Thoroughbreds. Two New York champions and the dam of a champion were foaled and raised on our little farm in Katonah (northern Westchester County) and Jane was featured in the industry's leading magazine in the year when she topped all consignors by average price realized at the world's largest yearling sale.
After careers in journalism, politics and banking, I'm delighted to have swapped a suit and tie for boots and jeans as my uniform of the day. I've kept one foot in the banking field as a director of community banks in Utah and California. In the not-for-profit arena I serve on the board of New York's Thoroughbred breeders' organization and as a trustee of the African Wildlife Foundation.
Africa has become almost a second home to us since our initial safari in 1986. We will be in Tanzania and Kenya for most of June, visiting African Wildlife Foundation (AWF) projects and renewing friendships with researchers and owners of private game reserves. We're fortunate our children and their families are within an hour's drive. Jill, 44, is a partner in a pediatric practice in northern New Jersey. Her husband, Tim Stoller, is a high school teacher. Their children are Jenna, 15, and Travis, 9. Rick, 43, has been training
Thoroughbred race horses since his graduation from Cornell. He has trained a North American champion and another horse who earned over $2 million. He and Dawn have been married for 16 years. Their son, Ryan, is 13.
It was great getting back to Middlebury for our 45th reunion and I hope to be there for the 50th. Meanwhile, mini-reunions with Anne and Jim McGowan when they make their annual pilgrimage to a hideaway in Maine are always a highlight of spring for us.
