Dear Class of 1971,
As we look forward to our reunion weekend of June 2-4, 2006, we stop and take a look back at our time at Middlebury. In those intensely lived college days we felt Middlebury was ours. We knew every building, every path, every tree, every contour of the horizon. The ringing of the carillon at sunset was for us alone. It wasn't until after graduation that we came to understand that for four extraordinary years we were simply very lucky tenants. It is only as alums that we earn our real and lasting connection with the college as stewards.
Though many years have elapsed, we continue to share much of what students at Middlebury experience today - a singular part of the world, enduring friendships and an education that most of us now treasure.
The generosity and vision of prior generations created and maintained our college, where no one's tuition over the years has ever fully covered the cost of his or her education. Rather that cost has and will continue to be partially funded by an extended community, which includes all of us.
This is a reunion year so we'd like you to step up and help provide an education to this generation of Middlebury students by contributing to our alma mater's Alumni Fund. Any gift or commitment you make to the College during the course of this fiscal year, which ends on June 30, will be counted in our class's Reunion gift. This includes a pooled income fund, a gift annuity or other special fund.
Participation is the key! Middlebury is in the midst of a five-year participation challenge whereby if 57 percent of all alumni make a gift to the college of any size an anonymous donor will contribute $1 million to the Alumni Fund! We hope our class can do even better - if only to surpass the 35th Reunion participation record of 72 percent achieved the Class of 1967!
The following members of our class have volunteered to help. You may well hear from one of them in the coming months.
Thank you in advance for your support. We look forward to seeing everyone in June!
