Simon Isaacs '03.5, after graduating from Middlebury on January 31, 2004, set off for Washington, DC to work for the United Nations Foundation where he develops and brokers public-private partnerships in support of the United Nations and its work.  While at Middlebury, Simon focused his studies on international development and international health.

In 2002, Simon served as the health-spokesperson for the Youth Caucus at the World Summit on Sustainable Development in Johannesburg, South Africa.  After a series of travel, academic, and field experiences, Simon focused his work on understanding the economic, social and political affects of HIV/AIDS.  While writing his thesis on the nexus between HIV/AIDS and American national security, Simon became increasingly interested in the role of the private sector in affecting change.  "There is tremendous power to affect change in the confluence of public and private sector, what is needed is a better understanding of how to effectively merge their interests, resources and capacities."   This is precisely the work he is doing today.

In response to the massive tsunami and earthquake that has devastated the Indian Ocean region, Simon helped to facilitate the private sector contribution to United Nations efforts in relief, rehabilitation and reconstruction.  Leveraging the UN Foundation's $5-million pledge, Simon began working with the UN Foundation's partners in the public and private sectors to identify ways to support the UN's long-term reconstruction and rehabilitation work.  To date, this work has stimulated over $40 million in additional resources to UN tsunami relief and medium and long-term rebuilding activities.  "It has been a very busy but rewarding winter.  Still, there is always more need than resources available.  I guess, that is part of why I love this job."

His athletic career at Middlebury, on the cross-country running, nordic ski, and track team has lead him to pursue competitive marathon racing.  Washington DC's climate and extensive trail system offers Simon the ability to train and race year around. Simon recently secured a starting spot in the elite division of the Boston Marathon and is training for the 2008 US Trials.

Simon has been able to keep connected to his Middlebury friends by attending events in the DC area as well as visiting the campus from time to time. Simon lives with two other Middlebury grads, Brendan Bechtel '03 and Josh West '03.  The three of them are having a wonderful time. "The great thing about Middlebury is that it attracts and cultivates people who have an incredible respect for the environment, for the needy, and for each other."
