Tom Santoro '01graduated from Middlebury with a degree in international studies. Although he had never taken a Chinese language course, he decided to move to Dalian, China, in October of that year. After working for a time as an English teacher, Tom took what savings he had and traveled around China and South East Asia for about six months.
Upon his return to the U.S., he ultimately got a job at a small IT consulting firm in New York. The job culminated with his opening an office for them in Singapore. During that time he had another stint at Middlebury, this time at the Chinese language school. He returned to China in February of 2004, initially to continue working on his Chinese.
Currently Tom lives in Beijing where he anchors a business news show called BizChina. The program is carried on China Central Television International and is broadcast live around the world. In this position he interviews business and political leaders as they come through China, providing him with a unique look at how China's media works.
While still at Middlebury, Tom was active in cross-country running and track. During his junior
and senior years he served as co-captain of the cross-country team. One thing that Tom has noticed since he graduated is that Midd Kids seem to be everywhere. Even in China he still sees people from school regularly and sometimes unexpectedly. He has remained involved with the Middlebury community in other ways as well. This year he served as Midd's China admissions chair and helped coordinate the admissions drive in mainland China.
