Black Orpheus

These two films offer a view of Brazilian culture as a mix of Western civilization, pagan ritual, and African and Christian religious traditions. The 1959 version, Black Orpheus (shown at 7:00 P.M.), won the Academy Award for Best Foreign Film and the Cannes Palme D'Or. It was remade in 1999 as Orfeu (shown at 9:30 P.M.). Both films are shown in Portuguese with English subtitles. This is the first offering of the Middlebury College Language Schools fifth International Film Festival-watch for details in spring 2004.

The Middlebury College Language Schools' International Fim Festival presents this bittersweet comedy about an aging bachelor, directed by Zhang Zimou. (2002, China.) The 7:00 showing is followed by an informal discussion in English.  At the 9:00 showing, please limit the speaking of English in observance of the Language pledge.
