DETAIL: Center and Right-hand sections of the mural.

Sixty-four canvas panels, each stretched on a frame and hung individually on the wall, comprise the mural. These are ordered into the fifty-five distinct images described in the Key to the Imagery. Once he determined the layout and design of the mural, the artist used digital images to create a vinyl template for each of the sixty-four panels. In his studio the templates were glued to wooden panels and then carved out to create a raised (or positive) relief. Following this, a canvas was laid over each of the panels and rubbed by hand with black oilstick. The relatively simple process, which creates a legible but uneven surface, is similar to the activity of making chalk rubbings from old gravestones.
