The Middlebury College Museum of Art is an integral educational and cultural component of Middlebury College. In addition, the Museum serves the surrounding communities in Vermont and New York.
The Museum's collection of several thousand objects ranges from antiquities through contemporary art, with an emphasis on photography, nineteenth-century European and American sculpture, and contemporary prints. A survey of objects from the permanent collection is always on view, with separate galleries devoted exclusively to the seventeenth through nineteenth centuries. The Christian A. Johnson Memorial Gallery, on the second floor of the Museum, houses changing exhibitions throughout the year. Made possible through the collaborative efforts of the Museum and other institutions, these exhibitions highlight the artistic achievements of cultures and artists not represented in the Museum's permanent collection.
In conjunction with special exhibitions and the College curriculum, the Museum sponsors programs and events, including lectures, gallery talks, and films. The education program, run by Museum staff with the help of students and community volunteers, serves primary and secondary schools in the Museum's vicinity.
The Middlebury College Museum of Art is free and open to the public.
