Middlebury College Dancers
Selected for National Gala
The dance program is pleased to announce that dancer/choreographers Yina Ng ’09 and Simon Thomas-Train ’09 have been chosen to represent the New England region at the national gala of the American College Dance Festival. The gala will be held in New York City, at the Miller Theatre, of Barnard College, June 4–6. Their duet It needs what we don’t want, with music by Albert Mathias and lighting design by Jennifer Ponder, was selected from a field of 50 dances from 36 schools at the New England Regional Conference in February.
Middlebury presented two additional dances at the regional festival: a duet choreographed by Rebecca Marcus ’07 and performed by Ashley Gamell ’08 and Sophie Levine ’10, and a solo choreographed and performed by Adriane Medina ’08.
Yina Ng ’09 is a dance and international studies major from Hong Kong; she will spend her spring term studying in Japan. Simon Thomas-Train ’09 is a dance major with a pre-architecture minor. Both have been members of the Dance Company of Middlebury touring ensemble for two years. They recently returned from successful performances in San Francisco, Sacramento, and the Monterey Institute of International Studies with artistic director Tiffany Rhynard. They have studied at the Bates College Summer Dance Festival and will present their senior independent work in dance next spring. Congratulations to them both on this distinguished achievement!
This performance and discussion by Andrea Olsen, professor of dance and associate in environmental studies (ES), is part of the ES Colloquium Series. Open to all; lunch provided for ES students and faculty.
While visitors are at the Mahaney Center for the Arts, they are encouraged to see the other environmentally related works on view: Patrick Dougherty’s sculpture So Inclined on the lawn facing Route 30; a photography exhibit near the Dance Theatre entrance by Brett Foreman ’07, ES/studio art major and CAPP Prize winner; and video by Daniel Houghton ’06, in the lower lobby, near Rehearsals Cafe.
