Migrations of people and animals, travel between homes, and the transience of dance all serve as inspiration for the Birdhouse Project, a combination of dance, music, and set pieces in celebration of Earth Day 2005.
Directed by Andrea Olsen, the work features a birdhouse set created by visual artist Carl Phelps, music by David Rothenberg based on bird songs, and a lively crew of energetic dancers from the "Body and Earth" and "Introduction to Dance" courses. The birdhouses are made of recycled wood and metal from collapsed, century-old farm buildings and the bases feature the invasive plant English Buckthorn. Birdhouses are currently sited by the Center for the Arts pond and lobby, and at the Middlebury College organic garden. This event is sponsored in part by a grant from the Ada Howe Kent fund. Bring your lunch and hope for sun at this dynamic performance on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, April 22–24 at 12:30 p.m. at the Center for the Arts pond. Free and open to the public.
