In celebration of its 25th anniversary, PTP/NYC comes to Middlebury to present two of this year’s offerings in repertory. The second program of the weekend, Neal Bell’s Spatter Pattern follows a screenwriter who becomes entangled in the life of a university professor under investigation for a grisly murder. Directed by Jim Petosa. Stay afterward for a post-performance discussion with the artists.

Neal Bell (Playwright, Spatter Pattern) is a Professor of Practice and English at Duke University in North Carolina. He holds a BA from Yale and a MFA from the University of Iowa. PTP produced his play Somewhere in the Pacific, which was in workshop at the New Theatre Wing at Playwrights Horizons in New York, and opened with a full production at Manbites Dog Theater in Durham, NC in 1999. PTP has also produced his adaptation of Therese Raquin. Bell’s other theatre credits include Shadow of Himself, Monster, On the Bum, Ready for the River, Sleeping Dogs, The Open Boat, Cold Sweat, Voices in the Head, Raw Youth, Gradual Clearing, Operation Midnight Climax, Breaking and Entering, Two Small Bodies, McTeague, and Ragged Dick. His television credits consist of One Life to Live, The Jury, Port Charles, Patriots, Two Small Bodies, Safekeeping, Brother to a Dragonfly, Knots Landing, and Terminal Choice.
About the Acting Company
Adam Ludwig ’93 (Tate) is proud to be working with PTP/NYC again. He appeared in 2008 in Crave and Somewhere in the Pacific, and before that in 1993 in Safari. Recent theatre work includes the U.S. premier of Sibusiso Mamba's Train to 2010 (Crossroads Theater), Frost/Nixon (Portland Center Stage), Jewtopia (off-Broadway), Good Morning Moscow (Bard Music Festival), Mary Stuart (Pittsburgh Public), Much Ado about Nothing (The Old Globe), and The House of Blue Leaves (Berkeley Rep). Television work includes Fringe, Sex and the City, As the World Turns, One Life to Live, Guiding Light, and Gossip Girl (webisodes). Adam studied at Middlebury College and The American Conservatory Theater.
Christo Grabowski ’12 (Men; Guard) is a senior Theatre major at Middlebury College. Spatter Pattern marked his first appearance on a New York stage, an opportunity for which he is extremely grateful. Middlebury acting credits include: Victory (Ball), Hecuba (Polymestor), The Good Woman of Setzuan (Yang Sun), Road (Ensemble), I Hate Hamlet (Barrymore), 27 Wagons Full of Cotton (Jake), and One for the Road (Nick). Later this fall he will appear in The Art of Success.
Lucy Van Atta ’12 (Women) is a senior at Middlebury College, pursuing a major in Theatre and English. She transferred to Middlebury from New York University’s Tisch School of the Arts, where she studied at the Stella Adler Studio of Acting. So far, her Middlebury credits include Tales of Love, Loss, and Laughter: A Relationship Study (2009 First Year Show), The Good Woman of Setzuan (Wife), Major Barbara (Lady Britomart- ACTF Irene Ryan Nomination), Carnal Embrace (Karen/Kramer), and Victory (Bradshaw); and this fall she will appear in Big Love. Spatter Pattern was Lucy's first Off-Broadway show; she was thrilled to be part of the PTP/NYC summer company!
Andrew Zox ’05 (Dunn) is a New York based director, playwright, actor. He has directed and performed at The Kennedy Center, Playwrights Horizons, Performance Space 122, Berkshire Theater Festival, Folger Theater, Olney Theater, PTP/NYC, Theater J, Ars Nova. Andrew is founder of The Black Out Series for the Washington, DC-based, Helen Hayes winning, Georgian troupe, Synetic Theater. He appeared in Folger Theatre’s Macbeth as a weird sister, with magic designed by Teller (of Penn and Teller). His plays include: The Tender Spot of a Human Hand, Serious Hammering, and My Way Little Girl (’07 Experimental Pick of the Washington, DC Fringe). Film: Ang Lee’s Taking Woodstock, La Beaute, and NYCB&B. Andrew is a graduate of Middlebury College.
Off-Broadway theatre company Potomac Theatre Project reflects "the nightmares and hoaxes by which we live." The company, which is operated in association with Middlebury College, was founded in 1987 by the artistic triumvirate of Cheryl Faraone, Jim Petosa and Richard Romagnoli. PTP is an outgrowth of The New York Theatre Studio, an Off-Off Broadway company founded by Richard Romagnoli and Cheryl Faraone which produced in Manhattan from 1977-1985. During its 20 seasons (1987-2006) in Washington, D.C. and Maryland, the company produced 75 main stage productions along with numerous new play readings and late night experimental productions.
Cheryl Faraone (Co-Artistic Director, PTP/NYC) is a co-founder and co-director of the company; she has produced all of PTP’s 25 seasons. Productions directed for PTP/NYC include Territories, Lovesong of the Electric Bear, Politics of Passion: the Plays of Anthony Minghella, An Experiment with an Air Pump,Perfect Pie,After Dinner-Joke, Arcadia,Stanley, Mad Forest, and more. She directed and produced in NY for eight seasons with PTP’s predecessor, the New York Theatre Studio. For the Olney Theatre Center she directed King of the Jews, The Real Thing and Anna Karenina. In New York, she worked on The American Clock andAn Evening with Comden and Greene. Her work at Middlebury College, where she has taught theatre and women and gender studies since 1986, includes some 27 productions;most recently of The Good Woman of Setzuan, Jumpers, The Heidi Chronicles, The Five Hysterical Girls Theorem, An Experiment with an Air Pump,Top Girls,Anna Karenina and Perfect Pie. She is a graduate of Catholic University and Florida State University’s School of Theatre, and has been involved with ART/NY and the League of Washington Theatres.
Jim Petosa (Co-Artistic Director, PTP/NYC) is Director of the Boston University (BU) School of Theatre and Artistic Director of Maryland’s Olney Theatre Center (OTC) and the National Players educational touring company. Most recently in New York, Petosa directed Tom Stoppard and André Previn’s Every Good Boy Deserves Favour (Town Hall) and the operas Carmen and The Man Who Mistook His Wife for a Hat (Helen Mills Theater) as part of the 2008/9 BU InCite Arts Festivals. PTP credits include: Spatter Pattern, A Question of Mercy, Therese Raquin, Somewhere in the Pacific, Marisol, Dog Plays,Statements after an Arrest, and Good. Some OTC directing credits:Democracy, Brooklyn Boy, Copenhagen,The Laramie Project, Art, The Miracle Worker, Jacques Brel is Alive and Well and Living in Paris (Helen Hayes Award—Outstanding Musical Production). Theatre J’s Collected Stories (Helen Hayes nomination—Outstanding Direction). A member of AEA and the Dramatists Guild, Petosa has also served on the boards of SDC, Catalyst Theatre, and Playwrights Forum.
Richard Romagnoli(Co-Artistic Director, PTP/NYC) is a co-founder and co-director of the Potomac Theatre Project; his most recent productions for the company are Victory: Choices in Reaction, Gary the Thief & Plevna, The Europeans, Scenes from an Execution, No End of Blame, The American Dreamand Press Conference/One for the Road.Other notable work for PTP includesThe Best Man, No Man’s Land, Pinter Briefs, Havel: The Passion of Thought, The Castle and A Hard Heart; Mountain Language/New WorldOrder; and Vampire. His work for the Olney Theatre Center includes Private Lives, Candida, The Homecoming, The Importance of Being Earnest, Camille. He is a professor of theatreat Middlebury College in Vermont, where he has directed numerous plays; most recently, Peter Barnes’ The Bewitched (American premiere), which was performed at the Kennedy Center as part of the American College Theatre Festival and Road. He also directed Italian-American Reconciliation for Project Y in Washington DC and A Hard Heart for Whistler in the Dark in Boston. Mr. Romagnoli trained at the School of Theatre at FloridaState University.
