Pianist Ingrid Fliter made news last season when she won the Gilmore Artist Award, bestowed every four years on a pianist. Previous winners have included Piotr Anderszewski, who played here shortly after winning the award, and acclaimed Norwegian pianist Leif Ove Andsnes. Already Fliter’s playing is being noticed: “The music seemed to flow from her with an utterly natural lyrical impulse, graced with power, luminous delicacy and a spectrum of tonal colouring that combined to mark her out as one of the most instinctive and eloquent Chopin interpreters playing today.”—London Telegraph. Her Middlebury program includes works by Beethoven, Schubert (Sonata in A Major), and Chopin.

Performing Arts Series Director Paul Nelson commented, "Pianist Ingrid Fliter is the fifth and most recent winner of the Gilmore Artist Award, which 'recognizes the extraordinary artistry of an international pianist of any age with the most generous financial support given in the musical arts.' A Gilmore Artist Award is given every four years to a pianist who 'possesses broad and profound musicianship and charisma and who desires and can sustain a career as an international concert artist.' Fliter has played recitals in the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam, the Philharmonia in St. Petersburg, Theatro Cólon in Buenos Aires, the Alte Oper in Frankfort, and the Kölner Philharmonie in Cologne."

In January 2006, Argentinean pianist Ingrid Fliter was announced as the recipient of the 2006 Gilmore Artist Award. Only the fifth pianist to have been so honored, the Gilmore Artist Award is made to an exceptional pianist who, regardless of age or nationality, possesses broad and profound musicianship and charisma and who desires and can sustain a career as a major international concert artist.

Born in Buenos Aires in 1973, Ingrid Fliter began her piano studies in Argentina with Elizabeth Westerkamp. In 1992, at the suggestion of Martha Argerich, she moved to Europe where she continued her studies with Vitalj Margulis at the Musikhochschule fur Musik in Freiburg and subsequently with Carlo Bruno in Rome and at the Academy "Incontri col Maestro" in Imola under the leadership of Fanco Scala and Boris Petrushansky. She has also participated in masterclasses with Leon Fleischer, Alexander Lonquich and Louis Lortie and receives ongoing musical support and artistic advice from Zoltan Kocsis.

Ms. Fliter began playing public recitals at the age of eleven and made her professional orchestra debut at the Teatro Colon in Buenos Aires at the age of 16. Already the winner of several Argentine competitions, she went on to win first prizes at the Cantu International Competition and the Ferruccio Busoni Competition in Italy and in 2000 was awarded the silver medal at the Frederic Chopin Competition in Warsaw.

She has also appeared in recital at the Kennedy Center as well as at the National Gallery and Corcoran Gallery in Washington, DC. She made her major American orchestra debut with the Atlanta Symphony, Donald Runnicles conducting, in January 2006, just days after the announcement of her Gilmore Award and in March 2006 Replaced Martha Argerich for concerts with the Los Angeles Philharmonic, Charles Dutoit conducting. Additional recent US engagements include recital and concerto appearances at the Gilmore International Keyboard Festival in Kalamazoo, michigan and at the Miami International Piano Festival in May 2006.

During the 06/07 season, Ms. Fliter makes her debuts at the Hollywood Bowl and the Caramoor and Chautauqua Festivals, with the Detroit and Columbus symphonies and the National Arts Centre Orchestra, and recital debuts in San Francisco, Chicago, New York at Carnegie Hall and London at Wigmore Hall. Press Quotes:

"...an exciting technique and keen intelligence animated by an impetuous temperament...a remarkable talent." --The New York Times

“Ingrid Fliter's lovely piano recital at the Kennedy Center…provided evidence of an assured and discriminating musical intelligence yoked to a stage personality of unusual warmth and charm… Fliter's clarity of thought and meticulously calibrated dynamic control -- she commands a seemingly infinite variety of louds and softs -- were immediately apparent. I do hope Fliter returns soon, and to a venue where more people can hear her. She has much to offer us.” --Washington Post

"...inspired pianism captured on the wing." -- Chicago Tribune

“[Fliter] proved a musician of immediate appeal. Her touch on the keyboard, soft and enveloping but with strength, heightened the clarity of her playing. She stretched long lines effortlessly and displayed a properly classical sense of proportion and understated elegance…Judging just from this one performance, she seems as much a thinker and communicator as virtuoso pianist.” --Atlanta Journal Constitution

“Fliter appears to be a pianistic force of nature…stay tuned, a wonderful pianist has arrived.”-- Los Angeles Times
