Volleyball Plays Four Matches

The Middlebury College women's volleyball team opened its home season with a marathon match against Union. The Panthers dropped the first set 29-27 before tying the match with a win in the second set. The teams split the next two, before Union picked up a 15-11 win in the fifth and final set.

Senior Lindsay Patterson (Aspen, Colo.) and first-year player Jane Handel (Evanston, Ill.) each had 17 kills to pace the offensive attack. Handel ended the night with 24 digs, junior Natalie DuPre (Louisville, Ky.) had 21, while Patterson earned 17. Sophomore Lauren Barrett (Medfield, Mass.) boasted 52 assists in the match, while Patterson had six service aces.

Middlebury then took to the road for three matches at the Amherst Classic. The Panthers opened with a 3-0 win over Westfield State on Friday night. Handel led the offense with 11 kills, while Patterson had 13 digs in the win. First-year player Elissa Goeke (Chevy Chase, Md.) had 4.5 blocks in the win as Barrett earned 31 assists.

Middlebury took the third set from Amherst, but it wasn't enough as the Panthers fell 3-1. Patterson had 13 kills and Handel earned 10 to pace the offense. Handel (18), DuPre (17) and junior Reisa Bloch (Rancho Santa Fe, Calif.) were the leaders in digs.

After dropping the first set to Brandeis, Middlebury battled back to win the next three for a 3-1 win in their tournament finale. Handel had a huge match with 24 kills for the Panthers. Patterson added 11 with 17 digs, while DuPre led the team with 19 digs.
