The Middlebury College softball team ended its season with a winning record for the sixth time in seven years as they closed out '09 with a 17-15 mark after a six-game week. Middlebury took the opening game 1-0 on a seventh inning, two-out walk-off hit against Rensselaer, and dropped the second game to the Red Hawks 7-4 on Wednesday.

The Panther women's tennis team ended its regular season with a 7-2 loss to Amherst at home on Proctor Courts. Anna and Clare Burke (Summit, N.J.) earned an 8-4 doubles win, while rookie Tori Aiello (Milton, Mass.) picked up a singles victory, leading 3-2 when her opponent retired.

The Middlebury College baseball team had a busy week, with a pair of non-league games at home before hosting Hamilton in a three-game NESCAC West series. A four-run fifth inning propelled Middlebury to a 9-4 win over in-state foe St. Michael's on Tuesday at Forbes Field. The game was the 150th meeting of the two Vermont rivals dating back to a 2-0 Panther win in 1910.

The Panther women's golf team earned another victory as the Panthers captured the seven-team Williams Spring Invitational. Middlebury shot a two-day total of 644, 18 strokes ahead of second place Mt. Holokye. Senior Julie Ellenberger (Concord, Mass.) won medalist honors with a pair of 77's for a 154 overall. Just one stroke behind in second place was Middlebury first-year player Flora Weeks (Seattle, Wash.) with a 155.

The Middlebury College women's lacrosse team jumped out to a 6-1 lead and never looked back, on its way to an 18-4 win over Bates in a NESCAC Quarterfinal game played on Kohn Field. The Panthers (9-4) advanced to the semifinals next weekend at Tufts, while Bates ends its season at 8-8. Middlebury will battle Colby in one semifinal next Saturday at 2:30 p.m., while the host school will take on Williams at noon. The title game is slated for noon on Sunday.

The Panther men's tennis team will be the top seeded team for this weekend's NESCAC Championship Tournament taking place at Williams. Middlebury will meet the Bowdoin/Trinity winner on Saturday in a semifinal match at 9:00, with the championship taking place at 9:00 a.m. on Sunday.

The Middlebury College track and field teams took part in the '09 NESCAC Championships hosted by Connecticut College on Saturday. The women's team placed second only to Williams in the 10-team event, while the men were sixth in a meet won by the Ephs. The Panther women qualified four athletes for the NCAA's, while three school records and one NESCAC record was set.

The Middlebury College men's golf team won its third NESCAC Men's Golf Championship as the Panthers topped Trinity via tie-breaker to capture the '09 crown. The Panthers last won the title in '06, also earning NESCAC Championship honors in '99. With the title, Middlebury will make its second trip to the NCAA Tournament coming up in May. The Championship event took place at the Ralph Myhre Golf Course on the campus of Middlebury College.
