The Middlebury College track and field teams sent athletes to the Open New England Championships at UMass.-Amherst over the weekend. Division I, II and III teams competed at the event, with some Panther athletes turning in solid performances. Earning All-New England honors in the 400 hurdles was Alice Wisener (Ridgewood, N.J.). The sophomore finished sixth overall with a time of 1:02.96, qualifying for the NCAA's.
After an NCAA Tournament win on Saturday, the Middlebury women's tennis team saw its season come to an end (11-10) with a 5-1 loss to defending NCAA Champion Williams (19-2) in a regional final contest. The two conference opponents had already faced off twice earlier in the season, with Williams taking both matches. The match was tighter today than it had been in previous contests, as the two of three unfinished matches were involved in three set battles while the third unfinished match appeared in Middlebury's control.
The Middlebury College women's lacrosse team picked up an 18-2 NCAA Tournament first-round win over Keene State on Kohn Field. Sophomores Chase Delano (Greenwich, Conn.) and Sally Ryan (Mountain Lakes, N.J.) sparked the Panther offense early, scoring the first nine goals of the game to give the Panthers a 9-0 lead at the 10:44 mark.
The Panther men's tennis team advanced to the NCAA Quarterfinals after a 5-0 win over Skidmore in an NCAA Regional match-up on campus. The Panthers will take part in the NCAA Championship week beginning on Tuesday, May 19th in Claremont, California. Middlebury improves to 20-2 on the season with a dozen straight victories, while Skidmore ends its year with a 16-3 mark.
The Middlebury College men's lacrosse team outscored St. Lawrence 7-0 in the third quarter to break up a 6-6 tie on its way to a 15-11 win over the Saints in an NCAA Tournament second-round match-up. The Panthers (14-2), making their 13th NCAA appearance in 14 years, advance to the NCAA Quarterfinals on Wednesday, May 13th where they will travel to Wesleyan for the third match-up of the season with the Cardinals. St. Lawrence, participating in their 10th tourney, ends their season with a 13-4 record.
