WOMEN'S TENNIS FALLS IN NESCAC SEMIFINALS
May 4, 2009
The Panther women's tennis team fell to defending national champion Williams 5-0 in a NESCAC semifinal contest played at Williams. The Panthers will hope for an at-large bid to the NCAA Tournament when the pairings are announced late Monday night. Amherst went on to win the title with a victory over Williams.
The Ephs took control early on, with Cary Gibson and Nikki Reich rattling off an 8-0 match at court one. The following two matches were more closely contested, but Williams came out on top of both for the 3-0 lead. Williams picked up singles wins by Nikki Reich (#3) and Kristin Alotta (#4) to seal the 5-0 victory.
After a late start in the first round, Middlebury made quick work of Trinity as the Panthers earned a 5-1 win over the Bantams. Due to the late start, singles play took place first, which is all the Panthers would need to advance as the match was played to decision. The Panthers won five of six singles matches in straight sets to pick up the win.
