SKI TEAMS RACE AT UVM

The Middlebury College ski teams returned to action after a weekend off, taking part in the University of Vermont Carnival. Dartmouth (892) edged the host school (882), followed by UNH (745) and Middlebury (683). The Middlebury men's nordic team won both the 10K classic and the 15K free races over the weekend, while the men's slalom squad placed second.
Pacing the team in the 10K classic race on Saturday was rookie racer Dylan Grald (Randolph Center, Vt.), who won the event with a time of 30:03. Just behind in fifth place was junior Patrick Johnson (Anchorage, Alaska) in 30:08, followed by sophomore Doug Debold (Wayzata, Minn.) in seventh place (30:16.5). Sophomore Chase Marston (Charlotte, Vt.) also turned in a solid race, finishing .2 seconds behind Marston.
First-year race Corinne Prevot (East Burke, Vt.) led the women's team, placing 10th in the 5K classic (17:22) and 12th in the 10K free (33:52). Sophomore Cate Brown (Hanover, N.H.) finished 19th in the 5k, followed by first-year racer Hilary Rich (Andover, Mass.) in 20th place (18:02). Senior Lauren Fritz (Chugiak, Alaska) earned an 18th place finish in the 10K free (34:19), followed by first-year racer Keely Levins (Rutland, Vt.) in 31st (35:10).
Rookie Brian Shpall (Englewood, Colo.) continued to pace the alpine men this season, placing fifth in the GS (2:01.28) and ninth (1:40.84) in the slalom. Junior Jacob Lund (Hudson, Wis.) was solid in the GS with an eighth place (2:02.27), placing 34th (2:05.52) in the slalom race for the Panthers. Other scorers for Middlebury were rookie Andrew McNealus (Woodstock, Vt.) in the GS (10th - 2:02.39) and senior Brian Swartz (Mendon, Vt.) in the slalom (28th - 1:48.78).
Junior Nicole Dvorak (Essex Junction, Vt.) led the Middlebury women in the GS, placing eighth overall with a time of 2:07.44. Finishing 13th (2:08.11) in the race was senior Leah McLaughry (Norwich, Vt.), followed by junior Lindsay Kraft (Coldstream, B.C.) in 20th (2:09.82). First-year racer Christine Schozer (Winhall, Vt.) led the team in the slalom event, coming in 19th place (1:48.82) to lead a pack of Panthers. McLaughry was next in 20th (1:49.73), followed by Kraft in 22nd (1:50.45).
