The 87th Middlebury College winter carnival is complete, with Middlebury finishing in third place overall with 741.5 points. Dartmouth won the event (846), followed by UVM (806) and UNH in fourth (734). The Panthers will return to action on March 10th-13th at the NCAA Championships in Colorado.
The Middlebury men were solid in the 10K classical race, finishing tied for second. Junior Patrick Johnson (Anchorage, Alaska) led the pack with a fourth place finish, coming in with a time of 32:30. Sophomore Chase Marston (Charlotte, Vt.) was next for the Panthers in ninth place (33:03), followed by sophomore Douglas Debold (Wayzata, Minn.) in 11th (33:17). Also turning in top finishes for the men were junior Graham Egan (Cape Elizabeth, Maine) in 14th (33:38) and sophomore Noah Brautigam (Richmond, Vt.) in 15th (33:41).
Senior Lauren Fritz (Chugiak, Alaska) paced the women in the 5K classic, finishing 11th with a time of 19:39. First-year racers Corinne Prevot (East Burke, Vt.) and sophomore Catherine Brown (Hanover, N.H.) were next for the Panthers, placing 20th (20:07) and 21st (20:08) respectively.
The men's slalom team finished the day in second place, behind a second place finish (1:33.86) from junior Bobby Poehling (LaCrosse, Wis.). Senior Jonathan Hunter (McAfee, N.J.) came in eighth place (1:35.47) in the race, while first-year racer Andrew McNealus (Woodstock, Vt.) placed 10th (1:35.86).
Junior Tasha Woodworth (Carlisle, Mass.) led the Panther women, placing fourth overall with a time of 1:36.57. Junior Nicole Dvorak (Essex Junction, Vt.) finished the race in 11th place (1:37.15), while senior Leah McLaughry (Norwich, Vt.) came in 15th (1:37.68).
On day two, Fritz and Prevot finished seventh/eighth to pace the women's nordic team to a third place finish in the 15K free race. Fritz finished with a time of 52:41, while Prevot came in at 53:14. First-year racer Keely Levins (Rutland, Vt.) rounded out the scorers in 34th place with a time of 56:11.
Johnson earned his second top-five finish of the weekend for the men, placing third with a time of 1:00.11 in the 20K freestyle race. Rookie Dylan Grald (Randolph Center, Vt.) was next for the Panthers in 19th place (1:03.11), followed by Brautigam, who finished 25th (1:03.46).
Both Middlebury alpine teams had success on Sunday, earning third place finishes in the giant slalom event. The men placed two racers in the top 10, led by senior Brian Swartz (Mendon, Vt.), who came in fourth overall with a time of 2:05.42. Hunter followed in ninth place (2:05.77), with junior Jacob Lund (Hudson, Wis.) (2:06.34) earning a 19th place finish.
McLaughery led the women's squad, placing eighth overall with a time of 2:09.90. Three Middlebury racers followed in places 14-16, being separated by just 3/100ths of a second. Dvorak led the pack in 14th (2:10.70), followed by junior Lindsay Kraft (Coldstream, B.C.) (2:10.71) and Woodworth (2:10.72).
