MEN’S CROSS CROSS COUNTRY WINS NCAA REGIONAL, WOMEN THIRD

The Middlebury College men’s cross country team won its first NCAA Regional, taking home the New England title at Westfield State among 50 teams competing. The Panther women placed third in their 51-team event, with both teams advancing to next week’s NCAA Championship races at Rose-Hulmen IT in Indiana.
Middlebury scored 91 points to nudge Bowdoin (101), Bates (105), Williams (113) and Tufts (114) for the team title, with five runners in the top 26. Senior Jack Davies (Grosse Point, Mich.) placed a close third with a time of 24:51.56 on the 8,000 meters course to lead Middlebury. Davies was edged in an exciting finish by the Bowdoin junior tandem of Coby Horowitz (24:51.36) and Samuel Seekins (24:51.45).
Junior Nate Sans (Princeton, Mass.) and senior Patrick Hebble (Sudbury, Mass.) placed 18th and 19th, respectively for Middlebury, while their teammates, sophomore Kevin Wood (Lincolnshire, Ill.) (25th) and junior Greg Krathwohl (Ipswich, Mass.) (26th) rounded out the scoring and earned All-New England honors by placing in the top 35.
The Panther women finished with 89 points, well-ahead of fourth place Bates (145), but trailing regional winner MIT (58) and second place Williams (75).
Senior Addie Tousley (Kensington, Md.) finished the event in second place overall, coming in with a time of 21:07 on the 6K course behind Amherst’s Keri Lambert (20:48). Junior Lucy Whipps (Portland, Ore.) earned a 13th place finish (22:05) for the Panthers, followed by junior Emily Attwood (Cape Elizabeth, Maine) in 21st (22:13). Sophomore Sarah Guth (Wilton, Conn.) wasn’t far behind in 24th place (22:14), with sophomore Alison Maxwell (Port Angeles, Wash.) wrapping up the scorers in 29th place (22:20). All of the racers earned All-New England honors.
