VOLLEYBALL HAS A 2-1 WEEK

The Middlebury College women’s volleyball team ran its win streak to six straight with a 3-0 win at Colby-Sawyer College on Wednesday evening.  The Panthers, who won by scores of 30-28, 25-17, and 25-19, improve to 11-3 on the season, while Colby-sawyer dips to 8-10.

Middlebury’s junior outside hitter Megan Jarchow (Cos Cob, Conn.) led all players with 13 kills on .393 hitting. Rookie Kathryn Haderlein (Pasadena, Calif.) collected a match best 32 assists and three aces. Senior libero Caitlin Barrett (Medfield, Mass.)  had a match-high 24 digs. Junior right side Amy Hart (Kenilworth, Ill.) chipped in seven kills and 14 digs. Colby-Sawyer was led by Courtney O’Hara who had nine kills and nine digs.

The first set featured 13 ties and seven lead changes. The Chargers jumped out to 9-4 lead before the Panthers came storming back to tie the game at 11-11. From that moment, the spread would not grow larger than three points. Colby-Sawyer had five game points, but Middlebury rallied on every occasion eventually scoring the final two points on a Chargers error and a kill by Hart for the 30-28 victory.

Leading by one at 10-9 in the second set, Middlebury went on a 13-2 run seemingly icing the game. Colby-Sawyer battled back with a 6-1 run to make a game of it, but fell 25-17 after an attacking error.

The third set was close throughout after an opening 5-1 spurt by the visitors. The Panthers closed the game and the match on a 5-1 run to win 25-19.  

Middlebury moved to 5-1 in NESCAC play with a 3-0 (12, 18, 17) win at Hamilton on Saturday afternoon. The Panthers then took on 12th-ranked Cortland, falling to the Red Dragons 3-0 (19, 21, 33).

Sophomore Olivia Kolodka (Verona, N.J.) led the team against Hamilton, hitting at 50% with 11 kills in the match. Hart followed with 10, while Haderlein earned 34 assists. Haderlein and Barrett each had seven digs, while senior Madeline Firestone (Solvang, Calif.) added a pair of blocks.

Hart and Jarchow each had 10 kills against Cortland, while Haderlein dished out 30 assists. Barrett earned 22 digs, while Kolodka and Hart had eight each, with 2.5 blocks from sophomore Piper Underbrink (Ocala, Fla.).
