VOLLEYBALL WINS THREE OF FOUR

The Middlebury College women’s volleyball team had little trouble with Plymouth State (11-15) on Wednesday, topping the Panthers 3-0 (9, 15, 19) in Pepin Gym.
Junior Megan Jarchow (Cos Cob, Conn.) led a balanced Middlebury attack with 10 kills on the night, followed by sophomore Piper Underbrink (Ocala, Fla.) (.455) and junior Amy Hart (Kenilworth, Ill.) (.400) with five apiece. First-year player Kathryn Haderlein (Pasadena, Calif.) earned 32 assists in the match, while Underbrink picked up three total blocks. Senior Caitlin Barrett (Medfield, Mass.) paced the defense with 10 digs, followed by senior Julia Gibbs (Houston, Texas) with six and Haderlein with five.
Middlebury picked up a win in their first match on Friday at the Hall of Fame Classic hosted by Smith and Mount Holyoke. The Panthers earned a solid 3-0 (18, 22, 23) victory over Wellesley (23-4) in a match played at Smith.
Jarchow earned 11 kills in the match with no errors for a hitting percentage of .733. Hart added 10 kills in the win, while Gibbs chipped in with eight. Haderlein had 33 assists and three service aces, while Hart added seven digs and four service aces. Barrett led the team defensively with 10 digs on the night.
The Panthers went 1-1 on day two at the Hall of Fame Classic, earning a 3-0 (19, 23, 16) win over Brandeis, before falling 3-2 (21-15, 25-22, 25-18, 22-25, 15-12) to Springfield.
Against Brandeis, Hart (9), Gibbs (8) and senior Madeline Firestone (Solvang, Calif.) (8) paced the team in kills with 26 assists from Haderlein. Gibbs added three service aces, with seven digs from Barrett and six from Gibbs.
Jarchow finished with 19 kills in the match against the Pride, followed by 10 from Gibbs and eight apiece from Firestone and Hart. Gibbs added seven service aces and 15 digs, Barrett earned a team-high 24 digs, Haderlein dished out 45 assists with five blocks from Firestone.
For her efforts, Jarchow earned all-tournament team honors and was the NESCAC Player of the Week.
