VOLLEYBALL WITH TWO KEY NESCAC WINS

The Middlebury College women’s volleyball ended its regular season with another NESCAC win, topping Tufts 3-0 (21, 13, 20) in Pepin Gym. The Panthers (19-6, 8-2) have earned the second seed for the NESCAC Tournament and will take on seventh-seeded Trinity on Friday, November 2nd at Connecticut College. The Jumbos (13-12, 6-4) have earned the sixth seed and will take on third-seeded Bowdoin on the same day.

Middlebury hit .245 in the match on its way to a three-set victory. After taking the opening set 25-21, the Panthers held Tufts to a -.067 hitting percentage in the second set as they cruised to a 25-13 win. The Jumbos came on strong late in the third set, but fell 25-20.

Junior Megan Jarchow (Cos Cob, Conn.) paced the Panthers with 14 kills and a .393 hitting percentage, followed by junior Amy Hart (Kenilworth, Ill.) with nine and senior Julia Gibbs (Houston, Texas) (4 service aces) with eight. Senior Caitlin Barrett (Medfield, Mass.) earned 16 digs in the match, followed by first-year player Kathryn Haderlein (Pasadena, Calif.) with 13 and 31 assists, and Gibbs with a dozen.

Middlebury picked up a big NESCAC win on Friday night, topping 22nd-ranked Bowdoin 3-1 (25-13, 19-25, 25-21, 26-24) in Pepin Gym.

Middlebury came out charging in the first set, leading 11-2 before later taking a 16-3 advantage behind nine straight serves from Barrett. The Panthers hit .423 in the set as they came away with the 25-13 win. Bowdoin led 6-3 in the second set before Middlebury came back to tie it at 9-9. The Polar Bears came back strong, pulling away late for a 25-19 victory in the second session. The third set saw the Panthers go on a run behind five serves from junior Meg Anderson (Berlin, Mass.), with Bowdoin later tying the match at 16-16. Middlebury played well late, emerging with the 25-21 win to take a 2-1 lead. The fourth and deciding set was back and forth throughout, with Jarchow ending the match with a kill for the 26-24 win.

Jarchow finished with a match-high 13 kills, while Hart added 11 and sophomore Piper Underbrink (Ocala, Fla.) chipped in with nine. Barrett led all players with 17 digs, followed by Haderlein with 16 digs and 38 assists and Gibbs with 15 digs. Senior Madeline Firestone (Solvang, Calif.) finished the match with three blocks, while Underbrink had 1.5.
