The Middlebury alpine ski team finished in fourth place after two days of racing at the UVM Carnival. The nordic events for the carnival will be contested on February 2nd and 3rd. Junior David Donaldson (Toronto, Ont.) opened the season with a win in the men's giant slalom on Friday, finishing with a time of 2:02.72.

Placing 14th in the GS on Friday was junior Liam Mulhern (Longmeadow, Mass.) in 2:04.96, followed by senior Bryan Shpall (Englewood, Colo.) in 18th (2:05.31). Senior Andrew McNealus (Woodstock, Vt.) and junior Hig Roberts (Steamboat Springs, Colo.) both had great first runs, but McNealus missed a gate and Roberts lost a ski on his second time down the hill.

The Middlebury women were paced by sophomore Kara Shaw (Hanover, N.H.), who finished the two runs with a combined time of 2:08.81, good for sixth place. Sophomore Katelyn Barclay (Pittsford, N.Y.) came in 12th (2:09.56) for the Panthers, while sophomore Yina Moe-Lange (Sammamish, Wash.) earned a 16th place (2:10.41) finish.

Saturday, soft and inconsistent snow conditions as a result of warm overnight temperatures and rain proved challenging for all athletes. In the men’s first run, 30 racers failed to finish, so even skiers who hiked and were over 30 seconds out of contention for the win still qualified for a second run. On the men's side, the only Panther to finish the slalom was Donaldson, who placed 10th in 1:50.13.

Barclay led the women in ninth with a time of 1:54.45. Shaw finished the race in 21st (1:56.79), while Moe-Lange came in 28th (2:00.32).
