The fifth-ranked Middlebury College women’s hockey team picked up a 5-2 win over Hamilton in game one of a two game series at Kenyon Arena on Friday night. The Panthers scored twice in 15 seconds in the third period to open up a one-goal game on their way to the win.

Middlebury opened the scoring 7:15 into the game with the second of the year from junior Jennifer Krakower (Montreal, Que.). Sophomore Katie Sullivan (Bethesda, Md.) held the puck during a line change and then picked up her own rebound after a wide shot. She quickly found Krakower in the slot for the 1-0 lead.

The lead increased at the 12:28 mark when Sullivan scored her fourth of the year with a centering pass from senior Lauren Greer (N. Hampton, N.H.).

Hamilton made it a one-goal game 9:46 into the second period when Hannah Jaiven netted her third of the year through traffic after a face-off win by Abby Runyon.  The Panthers regained a two goal lead when sophomore Emily Fluke (Sandwich, Mass.) scored on the power play after a rebound.

The Panthers had a great chance to increase their lead early in the third, but a penalty shot from junior Sara Ugalde (Burlington, Conn.) was stopped by Becca Hazlett. The Continentals came within one with a power play goal at the 11:47 mark of the third period. Naomi Woolfenden netted her third of the season from the center point after a feed from Julia Beatty at 6:10. Middlebury answered at 11:47 with the second of the game from Sullivan, as she scored from the right circle. The Panthers struck again just 15 seconds later as Fluke scored her team-leading ninth goal of the season. Senior Madison Styrbicki (Edina, Minn.) sent in the original shot that Fluke tipped past Hazlett.

Junior Laura Pinsent (Labrador City, Newfoundland) made 18 saves in goal for the win, while Hazlett made 21 stops for Hamilton.

Middlebury completed a two-game sweep of Hamilton, topping the Continentals 5-2 in Kenyon Arena.

Middlebury took a 1-0 lead 11:03 into the game when Fluke scored her team-leading 11th goal of the season. Sophomore Hannah Bielawski (Evanston, Ill.) won a face-off to junior Madeline Joyce (Boxborough, Mass.), who centered a pass to Fluke for the goal. The goal was the fifth for Fluke in her last three games. The Panthers struck again just 43 second later when Bielawski found senior Molly Downey (E. Sandwich, Mass.), who scored from the high slot.

The Panthers made it a 3-0 game at the 10:46 mark of the second period with a power play goal. Krakower moved the puck to Bielawski on the left side, before she centered to Katie Mandigo (Cornwall, Vt.) for the quick redirect in the slot. The goal was the fifth of the season for the Middlebury rookie. The lead grew to 4-0 at 17:12 when Sullivan fed senior Heather Marrison (Brewster, N.Y.) at the point, before her hard slapper deflected in off the stick of a defender. Hamilton got on the board with 27 seconds left in the period when Jill Tokarczyk netted her third of the year with a high shot from the left side boards.

The Continentals made it a 4-2 game 6:51 into the third period, taking advantage of a turnover. Hannah Jaiven scored her fourth of the year, skating in on the left side and scoring with a short-side shot. After nearly 10 minutes of scoreless action, the Panthers put the game away at the 16:32 mark with the sixth of the season from Sullivan. Krakower sent in a pass to Sullivan, who scored to give her a five-point weekend.

Sophomore Annabelle Jones (Homer, N.Y.) finished with 25 saves to earn the win, while Becca Hazlett made 25 stops for Hamilton.
