The Panther ski team finished fourth overall at the Dartmouth Carnival, with strong performances by the men’s alpine and nordic teams. UVM (982) won the event, followed by Dartmouth (820), UNH (722) and Middlebury (712). The Panthers return to action at the Williams Carnival next weekend.

            Junior Andrew McNealus (Woodstock, Vt.) was the top men’s alpine skier on the weekend, placing fifth in the GS (1:50.55) and seventh (1:33.81) in the slalom race. Sophomore Hig Roberts (Steamboat Springs, Colo.) wasn’t far behind in the GS, finishing sixth in 1:50.71, followed by sophomore Nick Bailey (Boise, Idaho) in 10th place (1:51.00). Junior Bryan Shpall (Englewood, Colo.) was just behind McNealus in eighth place (1:33.88) in the slalom, followed by sophomore Liam Mulhern (Longmeadow, Mass.) in 19th (1:35.35).

            Senior Patrick Johnson (Anchorage, Alaska) had another strong weekend on the nordic courses, winning the 10K freestyle with a time of 25:50, 25 seconds ahead of his nearest competitor. Sophomore Ben Lustgarten (Burlington, Vt.) finished the event in eighth place (26:50), while senior Chase Marston (Charlotte, Vt.) was 10th (27:02) as the Panthers placed three scorers in the top 10. Johnson turned in a solid second place (59:19) finish in the 20K classic, followed by Lustgarten in fifth (59:24) and senior Doug DeBold (Wayzata, Minn.) in 15th (1:00.28).

            Rookie Rachel Hall (Cumberland, Maine) led the Middlebury women in the 5K freestyle race, earning a 14th place finish with a time of 14:49. Two spots back in 17th (14:52) was classmate Stella Holt (Whitefish, Mont.), followed by first-year racer Annie Pokorny (Spokane, Wash.) in 19th place (14:55). Pokorny led the group in the 15K classic, placing 16th with a time of 50:49. Holt (51:23) in 21st and rookie Heather Mooney (Peru, Vt.) in 22nd (51:31) rounded out the team’s scorers.

            Junior Christine Schozer (Winhall, Vt.) led the alpine women in the GS event, finishing the race in 11th place with a time of 1:57.09. Not far back was rookie Katelyn Barclay (Pittsford, N.Y.) in 13th (1:57.28), followed by classmate Yina Moe-Lang (Sammamish, Wash.) in 28th place (1:58.84). The group struggled in the slalom, with Schozer leading the team with a 14th place finish in 1:42.57. First-year racer Kerry Daigle (Centerville, Mass.) came in 32nd place (1:45.63), while Moe-Lange was in 37th (1:48.05) to round out the scorers.
