After sitting in fourth place after each day of the 2012 NESCAC women’s swimming and diving championships hosted by Wesleyan University, the Panthers held on strong for a fourth place overall finish. Williams won the event (1,430), followed by Amherst (1,430), Tufts (1,261) and Middlebury (1,125). First-year racer Jamie Hillas (Woodbridge, Conn.) won two individual titles, while one relay team took home a NESCAC crown.
The Middlebury College indoor track team continued its record-breaking season with more top performances at New England’s. The women competed at Smith and finished fifth among 22 teams, while the men were eighth among 24 squads in action at Springfield.
The Panther men’s squash team finished up the season ranked 14th nationally after a solid weekend. The Panthers were third seed in the Hoehn Cup (B Division) at Nationals hosted by Princeton. The Panthers opened with a 5-4 loss to St. Lawrence, sending them to the consolation bracket.
The fourth-ranked Middlebury College men’s basketball team went 18-20 from the free throw line over the final six minutes of play, keeping visiting Williams at bay for a 73-61 NESCAC quarterfinal win at Pepin Gym.
The Panther ski team placed third overall at the 2012 Williams College Carnival. Dartmouth won the event (869), followed by UVM (840), Middlebury (690) and UNH (634). The men's GS team placed three in the top seven to win the event overall.
The Middlebury College men’s hockey team improved its unbeaten streak to six games (5-0-1) with a 2-1 win over Hamilton in Kenyon Arena.
Middlebury scored with its netminder pulled and 48 seconds remaining to earn a 4-4 tie with Plattsburgh in Kenyon Arena. The fourth-ranked Panthers (18-3-3) have clinched the top seed for the upcoming NESCAC Tournament and will host Colby on Saturday at 1:00 p.m. The third-ranked Cardinals move to 17-5-3 on the season.
