The Middlebury College ski teams opened up their carnival season with two days of racing hosted by Bates College. Nordic races took place at Black Mountain, while the alpine events were contested at Sunday River. The Panthers finished the event third overall with 699 points, trailing UVM (1,004) and Dartmouth (837).
Rookie Katie Sullivan (Bethesda, Md.) scored the game-winner with 1:34 remaining to lead fourth-ranked Middlebury to a 2-1 win over Bowdoin in Kenyon Arena.
The Middlebury College swimming and diving teams had little trouble with Union, as the Panther men and women picked up victories at home. The women's team earned a 226-67 win and took all but one event, while the men earned a 174-124 victory.
Senior Ryan Sharry (Braintree, Mass.) scored a game-high 28 points to lead top-ranked Middlebury to a 97-71 win over Castleton State College in Pepin Gymnasium on Tuesday night. The Panthers shot over 61% from the floor, holding a sizeable 49-31 advantage on the boards.
The Middlebury College women’s basketball team won a 95-90 overtime thriller at home against Colby-Sawyer in Pepin Gym. Both teams shot over 50%, but it was the Panthers that came out on top in the offensive battle.
Senior goalie John Yanchek (Hillsborough, N.J.) earned his 40th career victory with 19 saves as Middlebury fought back from an early 1-0 deficit on the way to a 3-1 win over Colby in NESCAC play Friday night at Alfond Rink.
The Panther indoor track teams returned to action on Friday just 45 minutes north at the University of Vermont. Several Panthers turned in solid performances, with the men’s team winning five events on the day.
