SKI TEAMS PLACE FOURTH AT UNH

The Middlebury College ski teams finished fourth at the UNH Carnival over the weekend. With the GS events cancelled, the Panthers finished with 639 points, with Vermont (1021), Dartmouth (873) and UNH (710) comprising the top three.
The men’s nordic team placed third overall in both the classic sprints as well as the 20K freestyle mass start race. Senior Doug DeBold (Wayzata, Minn.) was Middlebury’s top finisher in the sprints, placing seventh overall with a time of 3:38.68. Senior Patrick Johnson (Anchorage, Alaska) was next in 11th place (3:40.32), followed by sophomore Austin Cobb (Peru, Vt.) in 23rd place (3:45.05). Johnson led the group in the 20K, finishing fourth overall in 49:10. First-year racer Eliot Neal (Wilson, Wyo.) was next for the Panthers in 25th place (51:28), followed by Cobb in 28th (51:43).
First-year racer Stella Holt (Whitefish, Mont.) led the Middlebury women in both races over the weekend. Holt placed 13th in the sprint with a time of 4:17.64, while coming in 16th (43:44.5) in the 15K race. Classmate Rachel Hall (Cumberland, Maine) also scored in both races, earning an 18th place finish in the sprints (4:27.71) and 22nd in the 15K (44:43.). Junior Hilary Rich (Andover, Mass.) finished the sprints event in 18th place (4:27.71), while senior Sophie McClelland (Keene Valley, N.Y.) was just behind Holt in the 15K, placing 17th in (43:44.6).
The GS event was cancelled on day one due to poor conditions, leaving just the slalom for the alpine racers.
Junior Bryan Shpall (Englewood, Colo.) led a group of three Panthers in the top 13, placing ninth overall with a tie of 1:36.95. Sophomore Hig Roberts (Steamboat Springs, Colo.) finished the event in 12th place (1:37.28), followed closely by junior Andrew McNealus (Woodstock, Vt.) in 13th (1:37.61).
Junior Christine Schozer (Winhall, Vt.) paced the women, finishing the slalom in 14th place with a time of 1:46.24. Rookie Katelyn Barclay (Pittsford, N.Y.) came in 28th place (1:49.26), while rookie Mary Sackbauer (Vail, Colo.) was 36th (1:51.19).
