WOMEN’S BASKETBALL OPENS SEASON

The Middlebury College women’s basketball team opened up its season with a 64-50 loss at Swarthmore. Middlebury came out strong with a 13-6 lead at the 13:06 mark. Senior Brittany Perfetti (Clifton Heights, Pa.) hit a two and a three during the opening run, with four points from junior Tracy Borsinger (Chatham, N.J.).
Leading 15-8, Middlebury saw Swarthmore go on an 18-0 run over the next 7:32 to take a 26-15 lead with 3:44 remaining in the half.
Middlebury trailed 27-21 at the intermission, cutting the lead to 27-23 on a hoop from senior Stephany Surrette (Worcester, Mass.). The Garnet responded with an 8-0 spurt to take a 35-23 advantage with 15:30 remaining. Middlebury pulled within six twice during the second half, but could get no closer.
Perfetti paced the Panthers with 14 points, six rebounds and three steals, while senior Maddie Moreau (Canton, N.Y.) added nine points and four assists. Borsinger scored nine, sophomore Sarah Marcus (Williamsville, N.Y.) netted eight, while Surrette had a dozen boards.
Middlebury held Wheelock to just seven first half points en route to a 62-23 win over the Wildcats in the consolation game of the Swarthmore Tip-Off Tournament. Perfetti was named to the all-tournament team.
The closest Wheelock would come was 11-4 Middlebury at 15:01, but the Panthers closed the half with a 25-3 run to take a 36-7 lead at the break. Eight points from Marcus, seven from rookie Rachel Crews (S. Burlington, Vt.) and six from Moreau paced Middlebury, as the Panthers built an insurmountable 29-point advantage.
Middlebury got eight second half points from Surrette, cruising to the victory.
Nine different players scored for the Panthers, who shot 53% from the field. Surette led the team with a game-high 12 points, with Crews adding 11. Marcus chipped in with 10 points and three steals, while sophomore Katie Pett (Saginaw, Mich.) pulled down a game-high nine rebounds.
