The Middlebury College field hockey team saw its hopes of an NCAA Championship fall short, dropping a 3-1 game to The College of New Jersey. The title game took place on Vendetti Field on the campus of Nichols College in Dudley, Massachusetts. The Lions won their 14th straight game to finish at 24-2 overall, while the Panthers finish the year with a 17-4 mark.

The Panther cross country teams took part in the 2011 NCAA Championship races hosted by Wisconsin-Oshkosh. The Middlebury women earned their fourth runner-up finish in the 32-team race, while the men’s squad finished 13th. Washington University won the women’s race with 70 points, followed by Middlebury (111) and Williams (153).

The Middlebury College women’s soccer team saw its season come to an end with a 2-1 loss at William Smith in an NCAA Sectional match-up. The 17th-ranked Panthers finish the season at 13-4-2, while the #2 Herons improve to 19-0-1 with a school record for wins.

The Panther men’s hockey team opened up its season with a 3-2 NESCAC win over Colby in Kenyon Arena. First-year player George Ordway (Long Lake, Minn.) scored his first career goal as a Panther 3:30 into the contest, converting a quick pass in front from senior Charlie Strauss (Eagle River, Wis.) after a scramble.

Despite 56 saves from Colby College goaltender Brianne Wheeler, Middlebury made the 59th shot count in overtime as senior Maggie Melberg (Woody Creek, Colo.) scored 1:57 into the extra period as the Panthers took a 3-2 season-opening win over the Mules on Friday night at Alfond Rink.

The fifth-ranked Panther men’s basketball team defeated Ramapo 73-62 in the championship game of the Roadrunner Tip-Off Tournament. The Panthers improve to 2-0 on the season, handing Ramapo (3-1) their first loss of the season.

The Middlebury College women’s basketball team opened up its season with a 64-50 loss at Swarthmore. Middlebury came out strong with a 13-6 lead at the 13:06 mark. Senior Brittany Perfetti (Clifton Heights, Pa.) hit a two and a three during the opening run, with four points from junior Tracy Borsinger (Chatham, N.J.).

The Panther swimming and diving teams opened up their 2011-12 seasons by hosting Tufts and Connecticut College. The women earned a 152-148 win over Tufts and a 172-121 victory over Conn. College. On the men's side, the Jumbos earned a 166-128 win over the Panthers, while the Camels were 181-107 victory.
