LEUNG WINS NATIONAL TITLE, TEAM COMPETES AT NEWITTS

October 17, 2011

Middebury College women's tennis player Lok-Sze Leung (Hong Kong) has won the Division III ITA National Small College Tennis Championship. Matches took place at the Copeland-Cox Tennis Center in Mobile, Alabama. The Panther rookie defeated Gabrielle Clark of Emory in the finals 6-3, 6-2.

Leung broke serve at 3-2 and was solid on serve the rest of the way to win the first. She was able to survive a scary moment in the second set, falling to the court awkwardly after twisting her ankle. After nearly 10 minutes, she continued play, quickly putting an end to the match with her heavy ground strokes and aggressive play.

On day one, Leung defeated Sonja Meighan of Washington & Lee 6-1, 4-6, 6-1 in the quarterfinals. Leung had a huge victory in the semifinals on Friday, topping reigning NCAA Champion Kristin Lim of Claremont-Mudd-Scripts, 6-2, 6-2.

The rest of her teammates were competing at the NEWITT Championships hosted by Mount Holyoke. Duos played a doubles match and then head-to-head singles matches against the same pairs at the event.

In the “A” flight, the Middlebury pair of senior Victoria Aiello (Milton, Mass.) and junior Leah Kepping (Northport, N.Y.) made quite a run in the 32-team field. The duo earned a first-round bye before sweeping all three matches from opponents from Wheaton and Williams. Aiello/Kepping were eliminated in the semifinals, falling to a pair from Williams in super tie-breakers and 9-7 in doubles play.

Sophomore Dorrie Paradies (Atlanta, Ga.) and rookie Katie Paradies (Atlanta, Ga.) swept a pair of 3-0 contests, before falling in the third round of the event.

Senior Sally Wilkey (Vero Beach, Fla.) and rookie Sarah Macy (Potomac, Md.) fell 2-1 in the first round before battling all the way back with three wins to earn the consolation title.

In the “B” flight, junior Dee Dee Myers (Winnetka, Ill.) and senior Alyssa Puccinelli (New York, N.Y.) earned two wins before a tight semifinal match where Myers won in a superbreaker and Puccinelli lost in the same fashion. The duo won their doubles match to advance to the finals where they fell to a pair from Williams.
